Science Minister: Floods caused by inefficient water management

BANGKOK, 15 May 2012 (NNT) – The Science and Technology Minister has admitted that inefficient water resources management is the root to the country’s inundation problem while insisting that the construction of Mae Wong Dam will not cause environmental impact.

Speaking at a seminar concerning the flood crisis and budget allocation for appropriate water management in the future, Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi conceded that apart from natural disasters, the flood situation in the country has been exacerbated by the lack of an efficient water management system.

Additionally, the construction of Mae Wong Dam will be carried on in order to hold water from the North. The Minister has expressed confidence that the dam will not produce any impact on the environment.

Meanwhile, Dr. Thanawat Charupongsakul, an expert at the disaster and geographic information study unit, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, views the problem of inundation as a result of the lack of coordination between urban expansion and canal dredging. At the same time, he commented that the Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management (SCWRM)'s flood solution, which mainly focuses on flood prevention constructions, has failed to take into account certain social dimensions and public cooperation. Dr. Thanawat also expressed his disapproval of the floodwall construction along rivers and around industrial estates, given its impact on the residents within its vicinities.

On the other hand, Vice President of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Jane Namchaisiri sees the construction of the floodwalls around industrial estates as a confidence-building measure. However, if a flood occurs, production and transportation will still be impacted. Mr. Jane has, on this occasion, suggested that the water management plan must stress on the participation of all parties.

"Blocking the water" is not the answer... Thailand has enough industry packed land due to deforestation, and those greedy business men and dam_n builders ask for more land for their "Mega Projects which take 10+ years to finish and worsen the traffic congestion anyway???

Its taken the science minister all this time through scientific reasoning and deduction to discover what most people knew at the time the flood happened, brilliant work Sherlock.

Personally, I think it was the boats on the Chaopraya River not having big enough propellors

Indeed. Ten million Bangkokians swimming upstream would have been more effective. Looks like a national Learn-to-Swim campaign will be the next arrow to join the quiver.

He was doing a "Caligula" who ordered boats to be rounded up and put in a line across the Bay of Naples, so he could walk across them from one town to another

Flabberghasted!

There was I thinking that it was all a natural phenomenon, that it never rains on the plain and that the FROC were the new saviours of the universe.

I think most of us agree that it was all a perfect storm. Dams not at the right level, excessive rain in key areas, poor management, poor implementation of infrastructure over the years, no strategic planning of construction, deforestation, Yingluck's Burberry boots, a blue whale, several green mambas, escaped crocodiles, slum dwellers in the klongs, and that bloddy idiot plodprasop.

Good to see our Professor Plod has finally caught up with the rest of us regarding the causes of last years floods. It only took a few months but better late than never.

Now then Plod old chap, just stay off the zebra steaks and forget about trying to be Thailand's Moses trying to push the water where nature never intended and maybe you won't be remembered as the biggest fool in Thai politics.

Lucky for you there's a lot of serious competition!

"The Minister has expressed confidence that the dam will not produce any impact on the environment."

Anyone who disagrees is a stupid commoner. To think that just because a dam is built in the middle of a national park, that there would be any environmental impact is foolish.

The people elected this guy so he must know what he's talking about. We can trust him in this matter.

Now there may be some difficult paperwork in building a dam in that location, so the best thing to do would be transfer ownership of the land from the park authorities to a private individual who will then sell it to the government for dam construction. Of course a small commission should be awarded for their trouble.

What this individual knows, most probably concerns what he knows on the people, that he knows, for him to even be a part of this government. His public statements over the past few years, could never be considered to have been made by a decently educated academic, so he fits in quite well with his fellow party/government peers.

If ever anyone were to be truly qualified to be Minister of Inactive Posts, he would be top of my list.

This comment is surely intended for domestic consumption. How any educated person can utter such a statement with a straight face is beyond me.

Cutting down one tree, flooding one rai, building one road, all these things have an impact on the environment.

What he might have said if he was being really honest was " We intend to build this dam, there's lots of money to be made and frankly I don't give a shit about the environment". Thank you.whistling.gif

Please, pleeeaase don't feed....... as most Thais might actually try to physically eat comments! ermm.gif

Mind you, there's an idea? giggle.gif ... write "ice-cube" on pieces of paper, and sell them for consumption.

Rice?

Tom yum soup paper... hot and spicy paper with additional flavours... blink.png

Na! Let's not go there, it might work... cheesy.gif

- Just pay attention to what the King has been saying for years. He has live through it before and has studied the problem in detail. -
