A Mighty Storm Hit Mabprachan Lake Last Night.

Near the elephant village [soi Nernplubwan] we had no power from 10.30 till around 3.30-4 am.

I managed to doze for a bit but the storm was the worst I'd known in 17 years here.

Strangely ,talking to my Thai neighbour [female], she said she knew nothing about it and slept soundly until 8 am

No damabe thankfully.

In other words, in the UK you get highly sophisticated 1st world outages requiring logistical planning, specialised equipment including deployment of helicopters to repair the damage, whereas here we have primitive, uncivilized 3rd world outages that can be fixed at the drop of a hat by a couple of minimum wage labourers with a rusty pickup truck and a bamboo ladder.biggrin.png

Joking apart, good post and point well made.

But I know where I'd rather have my power outages.tongue.png

And ,of course, you cannot [elf 'n safety] put up a ladder while a storm is raging.

Yes, I do. It happens frequently. It even happened to my family in Northamptonshire - in the heart of England - a few years back. (and they received compensation form the power company for damage to their frozen food etc.)

You are the one who needs to get real. I don't write such stuff without having good reason.

Its a small world ! I'm also from Northamptonshire (the rose of the shires biggrin.png).

There are lots of good reasons why I choose to live in countries such as Indonesia (several years) and Thailand, but quality of the utility infrastructure is not one of them.

OK Mobi, explain to us exactly how you would repair downed power lines in the UK, in the middle of a blizzard, and a howling gale? You must have done enough manual labour in your life to give us at least an idea of what is required

OK Mobi, explain to us exactly how you would repair downed power lines in the UK, in the middle of a blizzard, and a howling gale? You must have done enough manual labour in your life to give us at least an idea of what is required

Easy.

Ship a team of Thais to Englandbiggrin.png

BTW I can assure you there were no howling gales raging when it took 2 days to restore power to my family's home, and neither were there howling gales in countless other instances when it took days to bring back power.

Sure the gales were blowing when the lines went down - same as here - but storms abate and work can begin. But in the UK that still often entails 2-3 days delay.

But here they actually do go out in the middle of howling gales and violent tropical storms. I have seen them - as soon as the power trips off they are out on the road to fix it, regardless of conditions - it is their job and they do it extremely well.

This is an argument you will never win.

Correct. Because it is ike arguing with a woman. "Cos I say so", "Cos it is", "cos my cousin in UK says so", etc. etc.

Look, anyone with a modicum of intelligence would know that my original comment was made in a light hearted spirit of jest. Sure, there was a small point being made, but the tone was one of humorous irony and was intended to be taken as such.

It never ceases to amaze me that even the most innocuous of comments is ceased upon those who seem to harbour deep resentments against other posters and will seize up on any conceivable opportunity to have a pop at them.

If it makes you feel any better, lets agree here and now that the power company engineers in the UK are far more qualified, far more efficient, much harder working, more dedicated, braver and far more professional than their counter parts in Thailand , and if it transpires on the rare occasion when they take longer to fix a power outage than their colleagues in tropical climes, (where there are far more frequent climate extremes), it is only because they are faced with much greater logistical and engineering challenges and that they have nothing but the customer's best interest at heart.

There! Do you feel better now?passifier.gif

That is better Mobi, sorry we all got miffed. Even you got miffed and we don't want to miff you. Now we can all accept your heartfelt apologies and also thank you for your understanding of how hard the job really is. We who have worked in the power industries salute you on your brave effort at making us all love you again

If the thai electrical company spent 2-3 days putting up the cables and doing a proper job then maybe everytime we have a storm they wouldnt go down. My eletric is always going down, a few seconds or few minutes rarely a few hours but still its a pain and its about time they cleaned up their cables also! In all my 28 years in england I dont think our electricity went down once.

There are 'ways' and 'ways' of disagreeing with someone without turning it into a personal attack or making snide remarks, however 'innocent' they may appear to be to the poster.

I made a light hearted comment about the time taken to fix power outages in Pattaya as compared to the UK and I was immediately attacked by two members, who disagreed with me.

My comment was obviously not intended to be taken too seriously, so a riposte in a similar vein would have been fine.

Or if anyone feels particlarly strongly that what I have written is particularly misleading, then do as one poster chose to do, write a polite and informative post, pointing out where I may have my facts wrong or that I do not have a proper appreciation of two very different situations.

Such a post was made by Smedly in post no. 28, which stuck to the facts and was polite, sensible and informative. And he effectively put me in my place without having to resort to getting personal.

Why can't everyone who disagrees with a post, reply like Smedly did without turning everything into a personal attack and so avoid the constant ill- feeling that pervades so many forum discussions.

And BTW, prefabs, I would be most delighted if you could kindly point out where I made a 'heartfelt apology'.

I may be getting old, my eyes may be getting dim and I may have trouble seeing when I forget to bring my specs with me, but I still like to think I can remember whenever I say 'sorry' someone to who has had a go at me.smile.png

Peace to everyone....

100% correct mobi - not because you mentioned me :)

I have always found your posts to be articulate and well written, some people here could do well to take a lesson in manners, taking a thread to a peronal level is common pratice on these forums - if it was face to face it would be entirely different there'd be an awfull lot of people talking to themselves with no friends very quickly

As I said before, it's like trying to argue with a woman. Your defence of "light hearted comments" is for you and you only? No one else is allowed to make comments which are light hearted? Gimme a break, you got an unhealthy dose of paranoia or what. Timekeeper in post #43 was taking the mickey and you decided to get back on your high horse??? Lord Save us from the Sot

I will let the good folks of Thai Visa decide just who is 'behaving like a woman', who is being personal and who is' taking the mickey' and who is on a so-called 'high horse...'

You really do seem to have a grudge to bear.... can't imagine why.... I suggest you take a deep breath and try to calm down; you will do yourself a mischief.

Its only an internet forum you know - not a fight to the death...

Now, back to the weather. The heat seems to have abated, but it still appears very unsettled. I think there will more storms tonight - real ones that is, not hot air on the internetbiggrin.png

prefabs, i was not taking the mickey

i have had a number of cyber stalkers on this forum who jumped in and try to create a problem at any opportunity because i had bested them in the past on other issues

some are now banned because of their behavior, although some are still following me around waiting to pounce

so please do not put a different spin on my words than i intended just to support your dispute with Mobi

to clarify, i support Mobi in his claim when he says :

'' It never ceases to amaze me that even the most innocuous of comments is seized upon those who seem to harbor deep resentments against other posters and will seize up on any conceivable opportunity to have a pop at them''.

Wow, seems like someone's living in his own, private, little angst ridden world.

Another heavy storm tonight just as I was taking my dogs and family for our evening constitutional.

They made a run for home, but poor old decrepit Mobi got a bit of a drenching.

But the lad came scurrying back with an umbrella, bless him.

No power cuts as yet, touch wood.

Posts removed also quoted replies , People are tired of this off topic bickering and flaming. . More than enough friendly warnings to keep it on topic and civil.

EDIT//

A couple of posts attempting to drag me into this argument have also been removed.

Careful out there I am getting very tired of this on going bickering.......
