Thai police arrest Brit with foetuses for black magic

Bangkok, May 18, 2012 (AFP) - Six human foetuses which had been roasted and covered in gold leaf as part of a black magic ritual have been seized from a British citizen in Bangkok, Thai police said Friday.

Chow Hok Kuen, 28, who is of Taiwanese origin, was arrested with the grisly haul in the city's Chinatown on Thursday, police said. The corpses had been packed into luggage and were set to be smuggled to Taiwan.

The suspect bought the foetuses several days ago from a Taiwanese man in Thailand for 200,000 baht ($6,500) and planned to sell them in Taiwan for up to six times that amount, police said. The origin of the foetuses was unclear.

"He said he planned to sell the foetuses to clients who believe they will make them lucky and rich," said Colonel Wiwat Kamchamnan of Bangkok police.

The man faces one year in prison and a 2,000 baht fine for possession of the foetuses.

In Thai black magic rituals, also observed among some Chinese communities, preserved foetuses are believed to bring good fortune to the owner and are often kept in shrines within homes or businesses.

Well not legally but he probably got them from an abortion clinic. I doubt he was murdering pregnant women to get them

I am not defending the guy but let me tell you a little about my Thai inlaws.

Upstairs in the parents old house is a small shrine. At the centre of the shrine sits a tiny human foetus.

It is the result of a miscarriage suffered by my wifes grandmother.

The whole family call him "magic uncle", give him offerings and ask for good luck when they feel the need.

I don't get it but understand it is their own culture.

It's different of course from profiteering for the sale of foetus's and the thought of where they may have come from is horrifying.

It's the supply side that is really stomach-turning. People wholesaling aborted fetuses for on-sale, without any compunction. Puts the "frozen tiger parts" story in the shade...

Sick bastard

Einstein omitted greed from his list

The police should threaten to chop off his fingers unless he reveals where he got the foetuses.

After he provides the required information, the police should chop off his head (IMHO).

"Chow Hok Kuen" A classic British name if ever I heard one...! Was it really necessary to have Brit in the headline?

I am sure he technically is British but it seems clear that this fascination with black magic and gold leafing unborn babies is not an inherently British pass time and I'd suggest comes from the same national roots as his name not his adopted nationality...

There is a clinic upcountry next to my local baker that has foetuses in medicinal jars on display in the shop window.

Knowing that foetuses are sometimes kept in Thailand for shrines and the such, I don't see his crime as that heinous. You can say how distasteful it is that this is the case, but nonetheless, it is the case. I doubt he was killing women to harvest them. It is no doubt a bizarre thing to want to buy, but I don't presume that he was the one carrying out the abortions or harvesting them himself.

There are other perpetrators in the list who have carried out the operations and even more worryingly actively sold them.

Meh.

I bet the people involved with burying those hundreds of aborted foetuses on the grounds of the Buddhist temple last year are kicking themselves to find out there's this kind of lucrative market available. Maybe another "hub" option for the kingdom?

Actually it was South Korea.

Headline is completely wrong.
