Hi!

I have just got my new passport from my Embassy in Bangkok.

The old one was almost full of visas and stamps, and no space for a new visa, but it is still valid. Visa is finished, but I have a valid stay (stamp) in the Kingdom until February. The old passport is with other words not cancelled.

I want to apply for a new visa in Penang, and I wonder if I can go out of Thailand with my old passport and in to Malaysia with the new one, and get my new visa in the new passport and then of course use only the new passport when flying in to Thailand again!

Thanks

Should be no problem, I do it all the time, i.e. leave Thailand on one and arrive in another country on another p/port.

However, since you will arrive at Penang with a 'virgin'-P/P immigration might question you. Just explain, you used the old one to leave (show it) and now

start the new one.

Swopping passports will work if you fly, but I am not sure it will be acceptable

on a land border. They will want to stamp you in on the same passport that you left the

other country.

The best way is to go to immigration and ask for your current visa to be

transfered to the new passport. It is a free service and normally only takes

a few minutes.

I'm surprised that your old passport is still valid for use! ((edit to remove reference to illegal activity - I understand comment was in jest but some readers might not - lopburi3))

Hi again!

Thank you for the replies.

I guess I should be okay as long as I follow Axels advice.

Because if I as an example should head home instead of Penang would I however come back to Thailand or Penang with a new passport without any stamps. My own country and I think generally in EU they dont stamp their own citizens out!

Thanks

Astral, he said he is flying, landborders is a different story.

For some reasons I keep one p/port for Thailand, i.e. there is only Thai in/out and extention stamps/re-entries. This one I use, of course when leaving Thailand and the other one arriving inanother country. Penang never questioned this, although I advised the OP they might be surprised on a 'virgin'.

Had this as well, airline in BKK pointed out that I do not have a page left for visa on arrival (I think on a flight to Cambodia) showed them the new, empty, p/port, happy as well as immigration in Cambodia.

@Gumball: For some odd reasons my embassy did once not cancel my old p/port, but explained to me that that one still was valid although full. Thai immigration was absolutely not happy as they had transferred my visa to the new one...

Finally I cut off the edges by myself, to void it, same as embassy usually does. OK, I could have gone back to the embassy and use their scissors.

I was in exactly the same situation you are in about a month ago. I got my new passport, and retained the old one with the valid Thai entry stamp, but the passport itself was canceled (you should never be able to have two valid passports from the same country). When I flew out of Don Muang, I just handed over the passport with the entry stamp first then showed them the second one, explaining I just renewed it in Bangkok. They looked at both, stamped the old one, and there was no problem. When I landed in Penang I just used my new passport, but had the old one handy just in case, but they didn’t ask for it. When I applied for my Thai tourist visa in Penang for my new passport they asked to see the old one as well. I guess it was because the new passport says it was issued in Bangkok, but there was no exit stamp as it was in the old one. They probably just wanted to see that I exited properly. If you use an agent, just give him both.

While that may seem a logical statement; it is not true. People do have multi passports from the same country.

Agreed with lopburi3. Rare, but possible. I know of at least one person with legal multiple passports from the same country. Second UK passports are also possible.

I have two current Uk passports at this time.

I journalist friend had 6 at one time!!

2 or 3 might be at various embasies for simultaneous visa applications, and he

still needed one to travel on.

Some countries will not allow you entry if you have the stamp of a certain country.......

Another reason more than one passport
