I certainly don't want to go all out and spend 150 baht. 30 baht is about the most I want to spend.

But I'm not quite sure just what kind of effect ตึง will have. Dictionaries define it as tense; tight;

get angry. Drinking I thought makes one loose not tight. Is there a colloquial meaning maybe

like numb or something like that?

ตึง can also mean thud when used as a noun.

What are they selling, up my way the ya dong is usually sold in 10 baht shots, or in a Red Bull bottle, called a gat for 25 baht a bottle, the large beer sized bottles are about 80 baht a bottle.

Getting harder and harder to find these days, although the spices/ingredients can still be bought.

It's probably ya dong, some kind of cheap whisky mixed with herbs. I didn't actually order anything yet.

There was a guy there drinking from a re-usable plastic cup and I'm sort of doubtful the cups are

sanitized effectively for the next customer to use. Maybe I could bring my own shot glass.

That's awesome. You gotta give it a try and report back. 10 baht rotgut shots is the kind of thing I love about this country.

Tried it already, heres my report.

Rough as ****, strips the enamel from your teeth, numbs your lips and tongue, rips the lining from the back of your throat, thats just on the way down before it hits the pit of your stomach, wait for the afterburn as it makes it way back up.

Easy enough to make yourself, the ingredients are sold all over the place, looks like bags of dried flowers. Pour into a pickling jar and add the whisky, store for a week or so and its ready to drink.

Used to see the little wooden stalls all over the place, sadly now becoming a thing of the past.

The other way to try it is go to your local mom n pop store and ask for the following,

เหล้าเสือดำขวดเล็ก

or

เหล้าสี่สิบขวดเล็ก

The tipple of choice of motorcycle taxi drivers all over the country.

I am in no way responsible for any after effects or medical bills you may incur, try at your own peril.

Sounds like brand names, I thought this was home brew. Can’t I just say

yadong chawt dio

I’m assuming there is a transcription word for shot but don’t really know.

I did see a guy get a shot of some sort of reddish liquid at my neighborhood

Mom and Pop shop, so I think they have it. Never seen any bottles though.

This is about all the bar and drinking vocabulary I have:

ก๊งเหล้า to drink an alcoholic beverage

มอมเหล้า make someone drunk; inebriate; ply someone with liquor

เมาปลิ้น drunk inside out

Ok here goes, fresh from the sorry shop this evening.

No Thai script cant find my glasses.

Baek or klong neung sip baht are what the locals use to refer to "a shot".

Be aware local variations come into play.

Last New Year I was in a shop in Chan, I wanted a bottle of Blend (285), I was given a bottle of Hong Thong, when I questioned it, the girl pointed to the English writing that said blended spirits on the label.

Right behind her was what I wanted, yeehoor nan riak wa arai I asked her, song roi was the answer.

I have never heard of Blen(d) referred to as song roi in Bkk.

Similair to people who want M roi haa sip, here in Bkk its called M roi.

Hope this helps.

Out in the boonies where I live, some of the small shops sell a bottle about a third filled with various herbs. You pour your own Lao Kao in the bottle and let it sit for a week before drinking it. It is truly horrible tasting vile stuff.
