Can Non-Immigrant O Receive Money?

Featured Replies

I am an US citizen, holding a non-immigrant O. My primary function is in a orphanage in Chiang Mai but I also work as volunteer English teacher in a public high school.

Last week, my supervisor in the high school told me she can give me some money. She told me the ministry of education is doing some sort of five month program so public high school can have native speaker teaching English. I thought I was illegible until a friend told me that money from such program does not qualify as salary but stipend, and therefore ok to apply. A quick search did not turn up any info since I do not read Thai...

So, what do you guys think. Is it ok?

Joseph

In Thailand you need a Work Permit to work, unfortunately whether you are remunerated or not is irrelevant.

There are few execeptions to this rule

A difficult question, I would have the school contact the revenue department and see if you need to declare it and pay tax over it (which will probably be 0 baht). A problem can arrive with immirgation, depending on how they want to treat it: as income or not.

No work of any kind without wp.

Here is a link to a similar problem - same program - most likely

I would not worry and just accept the money. your not taking a job that a Thai person could do.

Who would ever complain about your doing this work.

Some one who does not like you, or becomes jealous for whatever reason could do more than complain. It could lead to arrest, detention, expelled from Thailand and blacklisted so that you could never return. W.P. is an absolute must.

Dear All:

Thank you all for posting on my question. I don't think I will apply for 5 months program since my supervisor is not willing to risk anything on a program she does not quite understand.

I guess my question is now this: since I do have non-immigrant O AND a work permit, am I allowed to receive any money from organization/school in Thailand for any reason at all?

If you have a work permit to work for the school, the answer is yes. (unless the WOP is for volunteering).

If you have a work permit for another job, the answer is no as you are not allowed to work or volunteer for the school.
