I assume you got a appletv2 (tiny black one)

This one does NOT have a harddisc (thats why it is cheap)

It supports streaming only so you need to either "Push" the somgs to it by simply "play it" on the ipod, ipad, iphone or iTunes. (or with anything using airfoil software on mac or Windows)

Or the appltv does "pull" the music/videos from a iTunes shared lib or a Airport harddisc

If thats not enough you could "hack" it, which takes 3minutes to do and wont void any warranty. Install xbmc on the appletv and play/recieve anything in your network or the internet.

After hacking it u can plug in a USB Harddisc and actually do the mirroring for real.

If you're talking about AirPlay mirroring which is mirroring exactly what is on your iOS device's screen onto your TV via the AppleTV 2 I do not believe the iPod can do that.

The iPad 2 can however. Can you describe what steps you're taking to do it, and perhaps we can see where the trouble is?

Hi,

Ok, I have the latest version of iTunes installed on my PC, my ipod touch and iPad2 are updated and running the latest iOS.

I open iTunes, goto the advanced tab open it and ensure home sharing is turned on, I also look to see and both my PC and iPad2 are authorised devices on my iTunes account.

Then with the appleTV I go to the computer tab open it to find a message telling me to go my iTunes library on my PC and turn on home sharing. (it allready is).

With the appleTV I also go to the apple store to make sure I am signed in and also to network to ensure I am connected to the net.

I do a network test with the appleTV which results in a message which says "can't connect to Apple."

I then go with the appleTV to settings>airplay, here the Airplay is set to on and that is it.

I know it may be something simple but I get to here and find myself without options to go any further.

Thanks for your time and interest.

Also note, there is a difference between "Home Sharing" and "Airplay". If you want to access your iTunes library on your PC from the Apple TV, you'll be using Home Sharing. You can also access the library from your iPad. A couple things to check:

1) All devices must be on the same wifi network.

2) iTunes must be open and running when you use this.

Airplay is when you're viewing/listening to something on the iPad / iPod Touch, and want that song/movie to play on the Apple TV. You initiate this from the iPad/iPod. Play a song, or movie....and you should see a little box with a triangle next to the rewind/advance controls. Touch that box and you should see the option to play the media on the Apple TV.

Note you can also do this from iTunes on the PC. That box should show-up in the lower right hand corner of iTunes.

Also..."mirroring" is specifically displaying exactly you iPad screen on the Apple TV. Your iPad can do this, I don't believe the iPod can. Similar when you touch the box for Airplay, and select the AppleTV, you should see a switch to "mirror".

just like daveBKK said ..

out of the box AirPlay works Out of the box (assuming the devices are in the same network)

on the bottom right, your iTunes will show a little screen icon with a Arrow pointing up, clicking there will show all devices allowing Airplay in your network.

simply select the ATV and press play.

if you want to Pull the data, (access the media FROM your Pc using the appletv as controller, you need to have home sharing running OR have the appletv connected to the iTunes.

the easyest way is to connet itunes by go on the appletv to Settings-> computers -> add shared lib

once the passwordscreen shows up .. your appletv will show up as a device (just like the iPhone/ipad/ipod) in your itunes ..

just click to set up .. type the password showing on your TV .. and you good to go in secounds.

homesharing is more widely, requires to add your appleid on all devices doing it.

after home sharing is active .. all joined devices can exchange media between each other.

working great here at my place with an Apple TV, Xbox, 3 Macs, 2 iPhones, a iPad, 2 Airports lots of cables and even one lousy windows 7 machine ;)

parts wired other parts wireless ..

the Appletv even shows the phone number of incoming calls as little popup on the TV if watching a movie ;)

"think different" .. things just working
