Getting Spam For Cm15K Baht Course, "You Can Read Thai In 20 Hours," Course From One "Gary Orman" ?

Just curious if others on TV CM are receiving unsolicited e-mail today, or recently, about a "Rapid Language Learning" course, to be held in Chiang Mai, in June, said e-mail originating from http://www.genggwaa.com/html/profile.html ?

What I am interested in, of course, is how this person got my real (jealously guarded) e-mail address. And, if I know many others here on TV CM are receiving this same message, perhaps that will be a clue.

Thanks for your time, and I hope you are not getting the messsage, but if you aren't, and you really want to know where you can go to spend 750 baht per hour to be in a class where you learn to associate the Thai letter-shape for the sound "aah" with the arc of urine made by a man taking-the-piss, and the Thai letter-shape for the sound "t" with the shape of a turtle ... by all means use the link above.

best, ~o:37;

Thanks for the heads up, but not received this email yet with the account I used to open TV.

Do you use FB? If you have used your email there it could get read and used, depends on links your friends might click on, as they might get something that reads all the email accounts of their friends.

I think a lot of these spammers can buy lists. I have three e mail addresses. One is very private only used for one business contact. I get no spam on it.

My g mail blocks out a lot and my hotmail offers me spam on a junk list. I check it and once in a while their is a honest e mail. The rest I put on block for ever.

There is probably 5 or 6 that use a unlimited number of addresses but even these run out of steam after a while.

Yup, I got one, but I had to check my spam filter to find it. But, my email address is all over the place in Chiang Mai, so I'm not going to do any finger-pointing. You just need to get a better spam filter. Mine recognizes something as spam after I've blow away mail from a sender a few times without opening it.

Don't know what my spam filter is -- the IT dept (Hubby) set it up and keeps changing and tinkering with security stuff on our computers. Hubby goes to the regular meetings of the Computer Club, 1 pm on Tuesdays (they have a website) to keep up on stuff like this.

Nope, nothing received here from said Thai language person.

Not on my gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail nor my thaivisa.com gmail account. Checked all my inboxes and spam folders- nothing from this guy.

I don't think this is coming from Thai Visa, orang37.

I have a vague recollection of someone (Don't recall a name.) who posted something like this on on Thai Visa Chiang Mai some time ago.

Anyway, I appreciate being notified of spam like this. Thank you, orang37.

Pillion, do you really know this Gary fellow? Or did you just respond to the email?

I've never rec'd an email from them but "Rapid Language Learning" is a sponsor of the Expats" Club. It's possible they got your address from them.

Gary? Yes we're good friends, go way back. We've been close for a while, needless to say though, getting inundated by his spam put our friendship on tender hooks, but as the spam slowly died away our friendship rekindled. I actually joke with him and say he's the king of his castle 'Spamalot', he's a real card.

I can have a word with him about stopping this spamming business. I'll see what I can do.

I receive that many spam letters from the most unlikely sources, right here in Chiang Mai, that it's certain that lists are being circulated &/or sold locally.

I know Gary, casually. He strikes me as a decent sort of bloke and he does have a reasonable service to offer. I guess, like many other

enterprising business persons, he has acquired such a list - or lists.

I really believe that he would respect your request to have your address removed from his database.

Cheers

Is it honestly that big of deal to get an email about a Chiang Mai workshop?

Spam is a disease on the net. For Joe users like me it's just annoying, I have 4 email addresses that are used judiciously to protect from spam, I really don't need another MOLEX watch. As for businesses, it's expensive and a huge drain on resources, and that added cost is passed on to us. People who use spam to push their stuff are very much like...um...hold your ears...SPEAKER VANS! Just Google - spam bandwidth used

Pet hate,spam!

I have a few email addresses and blogs and the biggest pain in the rear is having to clean out the crap on a daily basis despite blacklisting, blocking etc.Filters in place but some still get through.

If this guy has a local list there are not too many places it can come from? As a few people here seem to know him I guess he is also a member here and will no doubt have read this thread without responding. If he has not read it perhaps his friends can advise him accordingly.

Genuine,if you can call it that, unsolicited mail (spam) will have an unsubscribe link but by the time you see that you may have copped a virus.

How many people do you think got the promotional emails?

I don't see the big deal really, it's just like cold calling or mail through the letter box, they're both legal.

Well if you are genuinely cold calling, why does your email go to most peoples spam filters/jjunk box....because our pcs are telling us the email is from a suspicious source.

If i wanted to cold call by email and I have done, I would address it personally and not send off hundreds...then it will be read.

You simply defeating the point of your exercise surely???

I understand what you're saying, but personally emailing every single person would take rather a long time! Thanks to the benefits of modern technology, we can send emails to many people and only have to write it once.

I'm not a fan of so called 'junk' mail filters as many of the emails people send are not 'junk' most are informative, as I'm sure many people would agree.

Almost, but not quite! To filter unsolicited email is a 'spam' filter, not 'spam' it's self. 'Spam', in the email sense of the word, is used to describe advertisements for Viagra and black pornography etc. Providing academic resources to those in need, is hardy the same. Can you read Thai?

Whatever you want to call it, describe it,and for whatever product/service it is,mass unsolicited email is spam and that is exactly what you are doing.

And your question-none of your business!

Ok, normally you would be correct, but my business is teaching people to learn Thai!

I remind members of forum rule 20) Not to post personal messages from other members, whether in full or in part.

The post quoting a PM has been removed, plus all the other posts discussing rule 20 have also been removed.

Feeling a little left out as I haven't received my spam ration! To be fair his course does seem quite interesting.

@ Thailand, what is your beef with him, do you run a similar business? Rather than getting petty it might be interesting if you just shared your website. Fight fire with fire and you'll be a man my son!

How am I being petty when a spammer still sends me a pm asking for my email!

I am retired but run a few free info blogs nothing related to learning Thai and I hate spammers does that help!

Having expressed an interest I guess you will be next on his pm list!

I must be living right. Three email addresses that are all over the web, and nothing from this source.

For some reason, I got several from him when I lived in Bangkok, but none since I moved up here.

What is so different about so called 'spam' than advertising? Google ads advertise on this site, you see billboards telling you to buy airasia tickets and I'm sure you don't complain when you see a billboard with a busty lady advertising bras!

Maybe if the 'spam' had those busy women featuring in it you wouldn't be complaining!
