BANGKOK, May 30 -- The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), Thailand’ yellow shirt movement, began a mass gathering at the Royal Plaza Wednesday afternoon to protest the proposed reconciliation bill.

PAD core leader retired Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang led the yellow shirt supporters to oppose the proposed reconciliation bill which was set to be deliberated in the House of Representatives today amid tight security.

Earlier, PAD spokesman Panthep Puapongpan announced that today’s rally will be conducted peacefully within the legal limits, saying that untoward violence or confrontation, if any, could be due to provocation.

The Yellow Shirt key leaders were scheduled be on the rally stage at the Royal Plaza to address the crowd this afternoon.

However, the exact time when the scheduled rally in front of Parliament will start was not set, Mr Panthep said, explaining that the key leaders needed to assess the overall situation.

Meanwhile, Pol Maj Gen Wichai Sangpraphai, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau said 1,240 metropolitan police, anti-riot and crowd-control officers have been deployed to provide security and maintain law and order at the protest sites around the Royal Plaza, Parliament and the surrounding area.

Gen Wichai also asked some red shirt supporters showing up in support of the reconciliation bill to leave the Parliament compound as a precautionary measure.

Currently, U-Thong Nai Road in front of Parliament is closed, with barriers placed along the road. (MCOT online news)

I guess the yellow shirts are against uniting Thailand and want nothing but trouble. The government should crack down on these trouble makers.

Maybe you should modify it to: "I guess the yellow shirts are against uniting Thailand under the sole leadership of Thaksin."

That would be the simplistic way of viewing this.

sleep.png I guess it makes a change from storming Government buildings, tv stations and international airports, and shooting at people in the street, kidnapping police officers and beating up their own people, bombing campaigns (sukhothai road, the jeep, anyone remember this??).

Lets hope they all go home in he knowledge that they are toothless now and their antics wont work anymore, more mature people have realised the error of their ways and moved on and are trying to move the country forward at last. They are starting to be held accountable at last for their terrorist actions and I would have thought even these people would have realised what a pointless cause they are following, even after getting their beloved dems into power the dems chose to do nothing with it and were rightly ousted at the next election.

I won't make the mistake to reply in detail, because as said it is discussed already 1000 times. It is said that people still believe Thaksins propaganda machinery.....

Hmmm...as for storming government buildings, tv stations, etc, both groups have done that. But only one burned down buildings and caused massive riots. I wish the yellow shirts luck in stemming Thaksin's grip over this country.

Gasp, shock, horror......surely your not asking the government to do to the yellows what the despicable dems did to the UDD? ..that would seem a tad hypocritical after all.

And many of the terrible yellow stories aren't true at all or complete out of the context.....

Thailand IS united. The only time when unity is tested is when Thaksin, Jatuporn, Nathawut and the other red criminals open their mouth.

Peaceful protesting, be it from whatever side, should not be "cracked down on". It is a democratic right.

The moment it stops being peaceful, and the moment they start taking over an area for a prolonged period of time, then is the time for action. Not before.

So disruptions to traffic and road closures count for nothing? How many roads? How long is 'prolonged'? And the then what action should be taken?

Pray tell, who are these people?

The yellows have made many mistakes for sure, but they have never instigated terrorist acts that i am aware of. Civil disobedience is much closer to it, but appreciate your desire to use a more headline grabbing type term. Never mind about accuracy. This is all about scoring points. This from the same sort of people who brought you the storming of the hospital wasn't an invasion, but an intrusion nonsense.

even after getting their beloved dems into power the dems chose to do nothing with it and were rightly ousted at the next election.

The PAD love the Dems so much they urged everybody to not vote for them.

I believe the PAD tried to get people not to vote at all. Nothing to do with the Democrats. So that is their idea of unity and democracy?

Um actually there aren't being held accountable. The PTP sponsored reconciliation bill will let them off, what the PAD is saying is no we should be held accountable (long with all the rest!!) which is why they are protesting. Seems you have something in common with the PAD !!!

Disruptions to traffic and road closures can't be totally forbidden. Do you know of a democratic and civilised country that does totally forbid it?

It's just a question of how far it is allowed to be taken, and what crosses the line. An example for me of what does is the setting up of permanent stages.

As for what action should be taken by authorities, well the first action should be, before we get to the point of physically removing people and all that involves, to look at what grievances the protesters have and see if there is anything that can be done to address their concerns.

If their issue is Thaksin evading justice, how about promising that Thaksin will not be whitewashed of all crimes? If the government does this, and they still don't go home, the PAD should think about what history has taught us with the red shirts.

How can urging people not to vote for anyone, have nothing to do with the Democrats, when what we are discussing is the erroneous notion put forward that the PAD love the Dems?

Of course it was against the Dems.....Or do you think they have followers who would vote for the PTP?

I think you're missing something here:

The yellow-shirt group continues campaigning for ''Vote No'' in the upcoming election to teach politicians a lesson.

Key leader of the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, Chamlong Srimuang said another PAD leader Somkiat Pongpaiboon and his team will travel to Khon Kaen province to hold a seminar to promote the group's ''Vote No'' campaign for the upcoming election as the group sees that Thai politics has reached a dead end.

Chamlong stated that the PAD will continue campaigning for ''Vote No'' to teach a lesson to politicians who are planning to enter the parliamentary system dishonorably by buying votes.

The group will campaign to urge the public to vote No, including voting No for the New Politics Party's candidates to demonstrate that the PAD rally has no hidden agenda.

Seems like a just cause to me.

PAD no vote thing was a cop out in my opinion. If they had conviction and balls they would have set up their own party and asked people to vote for them. To do so though would have potentially exposed how little support they had, and they didn't want that, so they went the "no vote" route.
