Does anyone know where i can safely pawn a very expensive watch in Bangkok or Pattaya ? Due to a family emergency i need a 6 week 100,000 Baht loan. By safely,i mean an establishment where the inside of my watch is not likely to be stripped out and replaced ! The watch is a 1995 18k gold Rolex oyster perpetual day-date blue jubilee dial with president bracelet, recently serviced at Rolex Bangkok,on Wireless Road. I am a British national on a retirement visa with a British Wife. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks.

I can't give you the answer you want, but if time is pressing and this is your only option then you might be up against it anyway. If nobody else can give a decent answer then perhaps you can take it round a number of pawn shops and have them explain to you, in English, all the details about the watch. You have to assume that most 2-bit pawn shops in Thailand will have not seen a watch like this and any that have, can identify it and any specialist information, and then value it correctly know a thing or 2 about Rolexes and have probably pawned a few in their time.

This isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but may end up being your only avenue. I hope, for your sake, that this isn't the case.

Good luck and I hope everything pans out well for you.

Thanks for the advice. I wonder if you know, are Farangs able to use the semi-government run Pawn shops ? Or are they strictly for Thai's ? I feel they would be less inclined to change the movement ( where a lot of the value lies ) or maybe thats being a bit too naive ! :-)

Take it to a Rolex dealer and ask them. There is a chance they work with a reputable pawn shop. Some Watch dealers will work with pawn shops to take expensive or excessive inventory from them if the owner does not pick up there property.

Tj is spot on with those numbers on loan. If the watch is in excellent condition, and you’re a really good salesman, you might get 80k on sale.

you will not get 100,000 for it..... It is maybe worth 75-95k; on a pawn you will be lucky to get about 50k, on a sale maybe 70k, and that's if your lucky.

Guy's,with all due respect the watch is worth a minimum of 5000 GBP. I had a valuation for insurance purposes in Hatton Garden last year. Cost of new replacement 14750 GBPounds, value secondhand 6000 GBPounds. You obviously dont know the watch,if you google it all will become clear. If you can get one for the prices you have quoted, let me know and i'll remortgage the house and have 50 of 'em. There is knowhere on the planet where you can get this model for that price !biggrin.png

www.ebay.com item number 110889053737 this is the watch i have. However mine has a limited edition blue jubilee dial, making it slightly more desirable ! Quoted sale price as you can see is $10500 usd .Trawl down the page on ebay and you'll see that your prices are way off. It doesn't matter whether it's Thailand,Timbuktu or Tonga the value is around the same the world over.

Here we go again another clown ! I do not wish to sell ! and the description, price and availability were merely pointed out to two other members to show how wide of the mark their valuation was ! Why am i even bothering with this !!!

if you don't want to sell why would you even give a very detailed description, with the rider that you want it back in 6 weeks, and with the rider that it is all genuine?

if you just want a pawnshop that is reliable you would just ask for a pawn shop that is reliable.

<deleted> mate stop being pedantic and get off my case ! I want to PAWN my watch ! The description was meant to HIGHLIGHT the fact that i need a VERY TRUSTWORTHY and VERY RELIABLE pawn shop so i dont get shafted ! The description and value of the watch would make it very tempting for some unscrupulous pawn brokers wouldn't you agree ?

Pedantic? Hardly. Apparently you are not aware of how your post can be read, by myself, and I would assume others. It truly reads like some kind of scam. I'm sorry mate but that's how it is. You getting narky about it doesn't change the facts as viewed by myself. I'm no trying to be a d_ick about it at all.

The way you have presented the details of the watch, the value of the watch and the defending of the value (linking to ebay values) it lends yourself to a skeptical examination of your posting. Who cares what other people think the value is if you are going to pawn it? That's between you and the pawn broker.

If you had even just said 'Rolex Watch' or valuable watch I wouldn't have even commented.

One one thing, we agree, I also hope that no one dealing in a Rolex watch gets shafted either.

GM, I work in the precious metals/gems business.... Appraisals are for insurance purposes; they do not buy items. Pawn shops will take an item on pawn usually at about 50% of its value. What an item is listed for on Ebay is not what it is worth or what it sells for. Although, Ebay is a great source for determining what items worth is, however you need to know how to go about it. Use the "Advanced" tab next to the search box, on that page check "Completed Auctions", that will display what an item has sold for, and that is always pretty dam_n close to its value. I am not trying to be a dick, but that is just how it works. Too many times people believe that their stuff is worth more than it is.

C'mon guys.. cut the guy some slack.. clearly most do not know what they are talking about, nor have the money to buy to one nor have they seen one. It is a solid gold Rolex daydate (the gold alone is well over what the guy is asking to borrow and he is not trying to sell it to you). The gold bracelet alone is almost 70 grams@1170 baht scrap price so i suspect his needs of 100k on loan is more than fair and far under any gold weight value of the piece. GM56 is merely asking whether anybody any suggestions for someone who is not going to take advantage of him. GM56 If you have no luck then please let me know and can organize your 100k baht without a problem. Andy

May i repeat,if you can lay your hands on Rolex 18k gold oyster perpetual day dates for 75-80k baht i will remortgage my house in the UK and buy as many as you have ! With regards completed sales on ebay,i think you'll find its around 5250 GBPounds for this particular model ! If you dont know of a pawn shop you can recommend to me-which is what this thread was about-then please go play crazy somewhere else !

You are correct. The value is about 5000 GBP. But when pawned, they will give you about 25% the value of the item. A used watch will get about 40% the actual retail value, if in excellent condition.

Sorry, but that’s the way it works. I have bought and sold many time pieces.wai.gif

I'm not trying to be his friend or give him empty support. I am trying to give him constructive advice from my experience in buying and selling exotic time pieces and antique clocks.

Sometimes, I wonder why I bother.

I have seen rolexs, cartiers, breitlings in pawn shops around pattaya. I have never seen one above a value of 120,000. All of them in boxes with original certificates.

There is a big difference to the retail value and pawning value. Your best option would be to phone a friend.

Or I'll lend you 100,000, with the watch as a deposit. With a 20% interest charge.

As for the gold being 18ct, it doesn't have much value in Thailand in comparison to Thai gold. There not interested.

Regards
