Govt to call for a pause in debate on unity bills

Two month recess after the House session tomorrow aims to calm political tension

BANGKOK: -- The government is poised to issue a royal decree calling for a House recess in order to cool down the political heat generated by the reconciliation draft, PM's Office Minister Woravat Auapinyakul said yesterday.

The recess will not, however, take place tomorrow as has been speculated because the House is obliged to clear a backlog of draft legislation, including six international agreements and two bills on money laundering and terrorism, Woravat said.

Pheu Thai MP Samart Kaewmechai said he expected the House to reconvene by August 1 and resume its deliberation on reconciliation. During the recess, the four draft bills on reconciliation would remain a priority on the House agenda, he said.

"After allowing the political temperature to drop by August 1, the House will again resume the reconciliation debate," he said.

Democrat MP Ong-art Klampaiboon said the political tension would not dissipate so long as the government kept the reconciliation issue on a legislative fast-track.

Ong-art said the government should heed a suggestion from the King Prajadhipok's Institute which called for engaging all sides in a dialogue on reconciliation in order to form a consensus before the legislative deliberation.

"The government should conduct a complete review on the reconciliation issue, otherwise the conflict might trigger a civil war," he said.

The authorities have already earmarked the budget for organising the reconciliation dialogue, hence there is no justification to rush the passage of the reconciliation draft before resolving differences over the issue, he added.

He urged Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to try and reason with her fugitive brother Thaksin to stop pushing for his amnesty regardless of the consequences.

Although the reconciliation draft was sponsored by Matubhum Party leader Sonthi Boonyaratglin, many saw Thaksin as the man at the centre of the conflict over amnesty, which would be granted as part of the reconciliation process, he said.

Meanwhile, Democrat MP Nakhon Machim said even if the Pheu Thai Party changes its mind and abruptly convenes a House session to push ahead the two controversial bills, including the reconciliation draft, Democrat MPs would be ready to show up at the Parliament House with just a few hours' advance notice.

"We will not make any overseas trips for the time being," he said.

Nakhon said the House president should call on the House to recess and ease the political tension.

"A rush to fulfil Thaksin's wish will set the country on fire," he said.

"... the House is obliged to clear a backlog of draft legislation, including six international agreements and two bills on money laundering and terrorism."

But Thaksin getting his money back rated a higher priority. Full speed ahead and dam_n the torpedoes!

Have they cleared this with Thaksin yet? I wouldn't be surprised if he calls them all back to work in a week or so. I suspect that he is worried about the economy going south on him before he can get his money back!

Rename it to reflect what it honestly is

Publish it to the people

Hold a referendum

And if PTP doesn't get the mandate, fresh elections

Putting in a delay to allow the political temperature to 'cool' is a nonsense. If you turn the gas off on a pan of boiling water it will cool, when you turn the gas back on it will start to boil again. These Bills don't need delaying, they need scrapping, and just when the country needs governing with all of the economic issues they are now going to give themselves a 2 month holiday.

One can hardly describe these particular proposed bills as, ''Unity Bills.'' which is indeed a misconceived title considering the reaction of the public at large.

The correct names should be either ''The return Thaksin to Thailand and reward him for his dishonesty bill,,'' or ''The disunity bills.''

For Thailand to have unity, they need to put those on trial for any and all crimes, including TS for terrorism and treason.

It does sound a lot like Monopoly, in more ways than one.

I think Miricle Thailand is a misnomer I think it should be bizarre Thailand. I just cant fathom the surreal situation evolving in Thailand.

The PTP were elected on a platform of lower class welfare, democracy and unity, they have a majority government and have the votes to achieve their mandate.

But instead the government is impotent from factional division and lack of leadership, their pseudo leader is MIA and the convicted criminal who owns the party but isnt a member pushes his own agenda.

This agenda is of legalising criminal, corrupt and murderous behaviour, by retrospectively amnesty for convicted and accused criminals including alleged murderers and neutering the Judicial system. So infact those who voted for PTP thought they would get lower class welfare, democracy and unity have been duped and have instead Thaksins nefarious machinations.

Thaksins call to arms heralds a bloody future for the people of Thailand, lets hope cooler heads will prevail and defuse the situation. The past has shown that Thaksins family will run and hide just before the hit-the-fan.gifhes already moving them to positions where they will have no accountability for what will happen.
