Contaminated Food May Have Killed Canadian Sisters: Phi Phi Island

A story came out 3 or 4 weeks ago about 9 thais dying from mushroom poisoning in phuket I think it was.

I have also heard stories of things called mushroom shakes which are apparently a rage amonst party goers on the islands especially during the full moon parties. Shakes laced with powdered mozzie coils. I haven't seen them personally just something I heard about maybe others have more of a clue.

Why on earth would someone want to drink anything laced with powdered mozzie coils?

With the latest details released, almost certainly rat poison.

Injudicious use of rat poison would be my guess too.

Wonder if they'll knock down this death hotel too?

About the ibuprophen - I just don't get it. Why can I walk into any Canadian drug store and buy a bottle of 120 caplets without a prescription, off the shelves, but in Thailand, I have to do the whole song and dance just to get 10 tabs...

Because it's the main ingredient to make 'meth' aka 'yaa-ice'

You are thinking of ephedrine my friend.

It is not an ingredient in meth. It is available without a prescription in both the US and Canada depending on the dosage. In the US, you need a prescription for over 200mg pills. I am not sure of the laws in Thailand but there would be little reason to not have it be sold over the counter as it is ... including at 711s.

How did this rat poison ended up in their food/drinks? Can't think they use the pellets as snack.

I found this.

We were told by a lovely thai guide that some of the mushroom shakes in thailand are not made using magic mushrooms. What some bars are doing is crushing up mosquito coils and putting them in the shakes,

Is it just me, or were they trying to imply that Ibuprofin (Advil) was some sort of exotic and dangerous drug?

No, I think they the comments are taken out of context.

As background information, an overdose of Ibuprofen can produce some of the "conditions" that were reported with these two women;

vomiting, stupor, bleeding. and rash.

When people are dazed they can take too many pills. It is a common occurrence. People do die from unintentional overdosing. It's why people who take alot of medications are given those plastic cases so they can measure out thir daily dosing and reduce the risk of an OD.

It may surprise readers to learn that this class of drugs is quite dangerous, even though it is OTC. Too much ibuprofen along with a serious GI related infection can kill. it is in the health literature, so it would not be out of the ordinary. It would be unusual, but it happens.

Stomach contents along with body fluid analysis would provide an indication of how much ibuprofen was ingested. 30 day turnaround on the lab analysis though. If they find telltale bleeding in the stomach, there will be an indication of too much ibuprofen as a contributing factor to death. What is really needed is that garbage pail of vomit from the room. Someone should have gone through it to see what the contents were, i.e. is there blood, regurgitated tablets, evidence of the alleged mushrooms etc. I will be surprised if this is done.

Nope, youre both thinking of ephedrine. Ibuprofen is easy to by in Thailand too.

Correct, Ibuprophen is classed as a NSAiD - which stands for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug - nothing to do with an amphetamine pre-cursor.

How many dentists do you know get pissed up, and at that young female ones?

Don't try to distort meanings and interpretations please.

Two actually...and they are family friends, both female in their early 30's

+ 1 vet

Hence the reason I questioned your comment of "educated" people dont get pissed up....as I know differently...thumbsup.gif

Further not tryin to destort anything....you were one one that that tied education and getting p*ssed together not me..

I think everybody does but Mel ... just visit about any university in the west.

Kids do experiment, but no, most good students don't mess with drugs, especially women in grad school. At least my experience after doing the JD and MBA things. I would imagine that Adderall may be abused, but illegal drugs were really frowned upon and not accepted.

Also, kids typically very close to their parents and with good reputations in small communities and etc., probably not wild children. Hard to hide this stuff in smaller, close nit communities. Only someone who has never done anything wrong in their life would be that afraid to get help if they took some shroom concoction served at a bar. Natural instinct to live would override that quickly though.

Anyway, blaming them at this juncture is tantamount to blaming a hot chick for her rape.

Really of no consequence though. Serving someone poisonous shrooms at a restaurant or bar that kills them is still manslaughter.

The human will to live is very strong and they would have gotten help if the could have, especially when seeing sister crashing. They were simply overcome and either too sick to seek help or no one responded.

NSAIDs are deadly when over consumed. Please refer to any product monograph. They also produce many of the conditions reported. (Other chemicals can do it to, but if the analysis shows a large amount of ibuprophen, then I have a hunch what will be concluded. As an example, people with heart conditions are prescribed a small baby aspirin dose. If you look at elderly patients, they are always covered in bruises as a side effect. Every drug has side effects.

So you are saying that they crush up insecticide poison and add it to drinks and serve it to farangs thinking they are taking magic mushrooms? This sounds like a very dangerous thing to be doing and could most certainly cause death via poison.

EDIT: I see now that wasn't your comment but rather a repost of a comment found on another site. In any case, if this is really happening then this is something that EVERYONE needs to be warned about.

Pol.Maj.Gen.Jamroon Ruenrom- commissioner of Krabi police conducted a forensic investigation of room #103. The police did not find any trace of violence but found several pills in the room. Including Ibuprofen an anti-inflammatory drug which should be taken with precaution and should not be mixed with alcohol.

A policeman handing out medical advice......a simple search on internet shows:

While it is generally safe to take ibuprofen and drink alcohol, it is highly recommended that you limit the amount of alcohol you drink while taking any medication, especially ibuprofen. Alcohol can irritate your stomach and intestinal tract, and taking ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin, for an extended period of time can also lead to stomach and intestinal irritation, as well as ulcers and potential bleeding problems"

Instead of all the speculation about Ibuprofen, Magic mushrooms and serial killers, should the police not wait until an autopsy is completed....as publishing stuff like this make them look more incompetant than normal...

Oh sure, then this thread would be filled with rants from the usual cranks about police cover-ups, incompetence and etc. Full autopsies often take several weeks even in western countries.

And that is why they don't sell >200mg OTC in the US. Advil and such are 200mg.

Just because a drug is available OTC in a country like the US does not mean that it is safe to consume in excess.

I would be quite surprised to hear these intelligent young girls both consumed excessive amounts of ibuprofen resulting in their death. That being said, I'll have to wait to see if the autopsy report is published for us all to see.

Nope. Ibuprofen is indicated for a reduction of fever for minor infections and the amount to cause serious GI issues in an acute administration would be silly. Ibu is about as innocuous as it gets. Safer than aspirin, tylenol and etc.

I was heavily involved in the Vioxx and Celebrex litigation (NSAIDs) and we extensively studied the efficacy and safety of all NSAIDs for comparative purposes.

I believe a study showed that Motrin (Ibuprofen) caused GI infection in .08 % of the participants in the study. Those are probably related to others issues and insignificant, but mentioned so it can be included in a black box warning to protect mfg from liability issues. Really jogging memory here though . . .

Its highly unlikely as you say - an OD would likely result in hospitalization with liver problems.

These girls seem to have died from some strong poison or drug.

These things take time. You can't figure this out over night. Dr. Pornthep is a very good doc and will get to the bottom of it, hopefully.

But out of respect to the families, please show some respect on this thread. wai.gif

They should insist on a foreign autopsy. Pornthip will provide whatever answer protects Thai tourism the best.

Incorrect! she has stood up to many a Thai establishment in her time and is highly respected!

This is in reply to " They should insist on a foreign autopsy. Pornthip will provide whatever answer protects Thai tourism the best."

What about some unscrupulous maniac person/persons who sought to exploit the girls using some badly homemade

"knock out" drugs?

I am sure that would be covered up.

APAP (Tylenol/Acetemenophen) is very toxic to the liver and much more dangerous than Motrin (Ibuprofen). You cannot lump two together or assume same. Motrin is about as innocuous as it gets. I did not read cite, but I cannot imagine it stating that Motrin causes liver toxicity unless it is a Thai article.

Seriously, believing that Morton had anything to do with this is silly. I guess if thru took a whole bottle on top of ulcers, maybe still nothing. I don't know and we don't know that to the case. I doubt someone throwing up would reach for the Motrin and they probably had it for periods, cramps or headaches. Trying to make this fit as a cause is silly.

Do people "shroom" here in Thailand? Tripping on magic mushrooms is quite popular among kids in California, how about here in LOS?

I have heard its quite popular on the islands, not sure what kind of mushrooms they are though. Psilocybn mushrooms are safe to eat in any quantity (physically, maybe not mentally) but there are other kinds which can be hallucinogenic that contain poison and are dangerous such as amanita muscaria and others.

There are several (possibly many) types of blue-staining psilocybes mushrooms in Southern Thailand. Most grow spontaneously on Water Buffalo dung, but some are cultivated.

The above is mostly true. Psilocin and psilocybin, the two psychoactive constituents are only considered toxic in that they produce psychoactive effects. Eating a bucket of them is unlikely to poison you.

Amanita muscaria (active = muscarine) is also psychoactive but not physically poisonous.

Further, NO deadly Amanita varieties are found in Asia with the exception of a small area in China. The deadly varities of Amanita (A. patherina; A virosa, and others contain amanatin plus a few other truly toxic chemicals. It is because of the lack of deadly Amanitas in Asia that every year in Oz and the US Chinese, Cambodians, Laotians and others die from Amanita poisoning. Amanitas have a volva (a surrounding soft casing like the shell of an egg, from which the juvenile mushroom emerges. In Asia the common "paddy-straw mushroom," a Volvaria species also has a similar volva. Thus the Asians in America or Oz see the Amanita, and assume it is the Volvaria species that they are fond of, eat it and often (usually) die.

But even then, the symptoms are very different. Amanatoxin poisoning results in severe gastro-intestinal disorder, generally leading people to seek help. But within several hours--the symptoms abate. So the victims are released. In the meantime the amanatoxins do severe damage to multiple organs (heart/liver/kidney) and only 12+ hours later do the severe symptoms occur.

The symptoms here certainly have nothing to do with magic mushrooms (psilocybe) nor any Amanatoxic mushrooms.

To say so is ludicrous.

No. Tylenol and not Motrin is toxic to the liver and one generally needs to consume about 4,000 to 5,000 mgs of Tylenol daily over time to suffer ill effects. I know many who have taken 8,000 to 10,000 mgs a day without ALT or AST being out of range. Quite common due to Vicodin dependence here in the US.

It sounds like there is talk that thais put crushed up mossie coils in the milkshakes and sell them as magic shakes. So a tourist, thinking they were buying a drink with mushrooms in it for a psychedelic experience are actually drinking crushed up mossie coils.

How about one of our wiki experts finding out what is in the typical thai mossie coil and whether consumption of them could cause some of the effects seen here.

ok.. did it myself... active ingredient is Bis(chloromethyl)ether (BCME)

according to http://www.epa.gov/t...f/chlorome.html

Acute Effects:

  • In humans, acute exposure to BCME may cause skin, mucous membrane, and respiratory tract irritation. (2)
  • Lung irritation, congestion, edema, and hemorrhage have been observed in rats and hamsters following acute inhalation exposure. (1)
  • BCME is irritating to the skin of mice and rabbits. Corneal opacity has been observed in rabbits. (1,2)
  • Acute animal tests in rats, mice, hamsters, and rabbits have demonstrated BCME to have extreme acute toxicity via inhalation and high acute toxicity via oral and dermal exposure. (3)

here is what the "high" in the above means as far as toxicity

Oral LD50 50-500 mg/kg

so 50mg of this stuff per KG of body weight is enough to kill 50% of those consuming it....

that is 50mg x say 50kg = 2500mg or 2.5 grams consumed would be lethal

Oh, thank God that the tragic deaths of these sisters has not affected tourism in the area, which should be everyone`s main concern. I couldn`t sleep at night if I felt business owners and the hotel was losing money.

No more, ifs, but or maybes, please! I won`t be convince unless the cause of deaths is officially proven and confirmed beyond a reasonable doubt.

What these so-called experts and investigators fail to understand is that by releasing the true facts regarding these cases and than dealing with the cause head on, is that this would give the pulbic more confidence that the Thai authorties have the problem under control that would give tourists more confidence for travelling and staying at these hotels.

Trying to coverup the actual facts will have an opposite affect and will only deter more tourists from visiting Thailand.

The symptoms are truly perplexing.

The pesticide chlorypyrifos which clearly was the cause of death from over-zealous bedbug eradication really does not fit in here at all.

Methanol poisoning causes blueing of nailbeds but not blackening.

Trivalent arsenic compounds such as arsenic trioxide, sodium arsenite, and arsenic trichloride could cause all the symptoms except hemorraging under the fingernails. (as little as 50 milligrams of one of the above can kill 50% of a group affected (LDL50).

Rat poison (coumadin or related compound) could cause the hemorraging under the fingernails, but then likely the diarrhea and vomit would be bloody also.

The only substance that I could envision causing such hemorraging would be the venom from a haemotoxic snake, none of which are found in Thailand, plus there were no bite marks. (Remembering how during the Bkk floods, reports of lost Black Mamba snakes existed--so who knows?)

I do hope that the relatives insist on a proper autopsy.

It is sad to see such disrespect by attempts to disparage the women by pointing to such impossibilities as magic mushroom ingestion.

I'm sad to say that it seems there is no way that this could have been accidental.

The active ingredients found in mosquito coils can be some of the following:[6]

  • Pyrethrum (Natural, powdered material from a kind of chrysanthemum plant; performance moderated)
  • Pyrethrins (Extract of insecticidal chemicals in pyrethrum)
  • Allethrin (sometimes d-trans-allethrin) (The first synthetic pyrethroid)
  • Esbiothrin (A form of allethrin)
  • Dibutyl hydroxyl toluene (BHT) (An optional additive to prevent pyrethroid from oxidizing during burning)
  • Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) (An optional additive to improve the effectiveness of pyrethroid)
  • N-(2-ethylhexyl)-bicyclo-(2,2,1)hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboximide (MGK 264) (An optional additive to improve effectiveness of a pyrethroid)

Pyrethrins

Toxicity is usually associated with applying much more of the product than directed. Care should be taken to observe direction labels when using this substance around humans and animals. Overdose and toxicity can result in a variety of symptoms, especially in pets, including drooling, lethargy, muscle tremors, vomiting, seizures and death

I agree with you that Ibuprofen has nothing to do with their death.

Acetaminophen (in Tylenol amongst many other OTC's) above a few grams (7g) can cause liver damage and is a leading cause of liver failure in the Western world and the leading cause of drug-induced liver failure in the United States*. Ibuprofen can also cause liver damage - although it is rare.

Roofies. Can still buy pharmaceutical in Mexico and other places. Maybe US. Not sure. Pretty common here though. Just a strong GABA type benzo like Klonopin, Xanax, Ativan, Valium and etc. Not toxic unless bootlegged and messed up bad in making
