webfact
Australian stabbed in heart in Thai bag-snatch tragedy PHUKET: -- An Australian woman has been stabbed to death in a suspected bag-snatch gone wrong on the popular holiday island of Phuket in Thailand. The woman was walking with a friend near their hotel complex in Kata Noi Bay, on Phuket's west coast, about 10.30pm last night when they were attacked by two men who approached them on a motorbike. The men attempted to steal the handbags of the women and lashed out with a knife when they couldn't grab them. Ms Yone, a supervisor at the five-star Katathani Phuket Beach Resort where the women were staying, said this morning that one of the women was stabbed in the heart and died soon after. The other woman suffered a slash wound to her arm and was taken to hospital in Phuket. A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Thai police had launched an investigation into the woman’s death. ‘‘We are aware of the death of an Australian woman in Thailand and are providing consular assistance to her family and to the other woman involved in the incident,’’ she said. ‘‘It would not be appropriate to discuss the case further while a police investigation is in progress.’’ It is believed the woman was aged 60 and an experienced traveller who had spent a lot of time in south-east Asia. The two women were part of a group of 10 travel agents from Perth who arrived in Thailand on Monday. "They were attacked by the men on the street," Ms Yone said. "One woman had a cut on her arm and she went to the hospital. She is already back from the hospital. Reasonableman
http://www.perthnow....u-1226403697496 POLICE are hunting two killers who knifed to death a female Perth travel agent in a bag snatch gone wrong on the Thai holiday island of Phuket last night. The woman struggled to hold her bag. A 10cm knife wound to the heart killed her soon after as the two men sped off on a motorcycle about 10.30pm local time (11.30pm WA time). I might be wrong of course .Well Thailand is not safe anymore that for sure.

If I am reading your post correctly ... you want the Australian Government to 'slap a ban' of Phuket or on Thailand? Phuket maybe be difficult to do because it's not a Nation. The whole of Thailand is not Phuket.

carra
Experienced travelers? When are women going to learn to stop carrying those handbags in places where they know purse snatching is rampant? Well to do that you would need to know that purse snatches are rampant in that area, and with the BIB and TAT already starting their public relations on this saying it is a rare occurrence many people might just believe they <deleted> these tow public bodies feed them. On another note, irrespective of whether they knew or not, it is not the fault of the victim.

maidu
I just returned from a week in Krabi - accompanied by two pretty akha ladies. While in Krabi, we seriously contemplated going to Phuket and also considered Phi Phi - which are both relatively nearby. We didn't, and maybe that's a good thing. Poisonings in Phi Phi and stabbings in Phuket ......probably best we stuck to ho-hum Krabi. Had a v. nice time, btw. am saddened about the wanton stabbing. Don't know if there's much local police could have done to prevent such a bizarre violent act.
schnazzy
wow, I would assume that LOS will take a Australian tourism hit for this especially in light of the girls last week in pii pii, and now a travel agent. I doubt aussie agents will be recommending LOS for this coming high season. It would be interesting to see if increasing penalties for crimes against tourist would reduce this sort of thing. like double the sentence.
geriatrickid
Welcome to Phuket. This is what it's like here. Some will say it's safe blah blah. teh fact of the matter is that most of these attacks successful or attempted don't even get reported to the police. What's the point? It makes me ill every time I read it as it shows zero respect for the victims. Whenever they do this it conveys that their only interest is the impact on tourism and therefore baht.

David48
We were discussing this incident this morning in another area here and all the comments were directed to the support of the victim. There are times and places to vilify Phuket and all that has tragically gone wrong there ... but maybe not this time, not this day and not this thread.
