Abhisit to deliver speech on good governance in Penang Wednesday

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajvia has been invited to deliver a speech on good governance and anticorruption at an international congress in Penang on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters before leaving on a plane for Penang, Abhisit said he had been invited to make a speech to encourage all Asean countries to be aware of the need to ensure good governance and to fight corruption.

Abhisit said good governance and fighting against corruption are needed because Asean will see fast economic expansion while democratic and goodgovernance developments remain problematic in several countries.

Abhisit will deliver his address during the inaugural Conference of the Asean Coalition for Clean Governance, organised by the Penang Institute.

Abhisit said the conference was part of the preparations by Asean countries for the Asean Economic Cooperation.

Abhisit, who is now the opposition leader, is among several influential speakers, all from the Asean region, being hosted by the state government as part of its agenda to promote clean governance.

Earlier, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng of Singapore told reporters that the speakers greatly influenced the course of governance in their respective nations.

"Abhisit is, of course, a strong proponent of good governance and opposes authoritarianism. He adheres to those principles," Lim said.

Any politician would say this but does the politican practice what he/she preaches. Good governance is in the eye of the beholder and I don't think too many eyes have seen good governance in Thailand for the last several years (probably longer).

well there are a lot that prefer strong, fast decisions by strong leader....That was with purpose supported by the 1997 (or 96??) charter.

Well Abhisit wasn't corrupt and even with the corrupt coalition partner the government was the last corrupt democratic government for a decade.

There is absolutely no one in Thailand, let alone the Thai government, that is in a position to lecture ANYONE about the subject of good governance. Thailand's governance in the last decade has added up to nothing but an embarrassing series of disasters. Coups, puppet administrations, political violence and assassinations, military interference, chronic corruption and nepotism, and the meddling of some very important people (a person) who are supposed to have a non-partisan, ceremonial relationship with Thai government are hardly cause for confidence in Thailand's conception of quality government administration. Thailand is a case study in how NOT to govern.

Balls on the table time, I think he is an OK guy.....for a Thai Politician. I would think that he would want to make positive changes here and bring Thailand out of the dark ages. only problem is that the people paying the piper do not want to change the tune.

Well, at least he has an opinion and isn't afraid to express it. I can imagine Yinglucks speech; I don't know...I wasn't there...I was stuck on a helicopter....I haven't read the legislation and last but not least, my brother hasn't told me what to say yet.

Possibly Yingluck was invited first, but she had to decline due to the simple fact that shopping on the island of Penang is rather limited (by her standards of course). Abhisit ,of course, will deliver his speech in flawless English, whereas YS would struggle to get the audience's attention.

As you know, Abhisit was born in England and spent half of his life in England. As for the speech in Penang, probably, in a country of freedom of speech (sarcasm), his presentation in flawless English will enthrall the audience. The tiny little problem is that he has never been able to lead the country out of the mess. His yellow friends might put him in position again to prove his abilities.

Maybe more of a desperate attempt by Mark to speak anywhere, rather than a "diplomatic slap in the face with a kipper" to the Royal Thai Government.
