Travel Insurance Help

Featured Replies

I am in Asia for six months with my wife and wanted to do travel insurance for multi trips but the sites I have visited all say for annual cover the minimum trip is around 40 days.

I will be away for the whole 6 months, she will be away for two months each time (2 returns to LOS).

Who do you use? Can you steer me to their web sites please

Regards

Jack

Is it travel insurance only (missed planes, reissued nonrefundable tickets, lost baggage...) or health insurance or both?

When I travelled on my own arrangement, I would contact my Oz health fund, they had it all available.

For Thailand, 1 month was about 90US$.

Travel agencies (or even at the airport) sell insurance policies for about 15% more than that.

You are looking for extended Travel insurance (includes Medic Repat.etc)and you can try outfits like Backpackers(on the net)...bit of their speal....

Sometimes have age limits etc ...check.....

We beleive that backpackers require different insurance from standard holidays.

With this in mind all our policies are backed by some of the UK leading Travel Insurance companies. Providing cover 24hrs a day 365 days a year.

Whether you're travelling around Europe, Australia or USA for a short trip or 18 months away we have the right insurance policy for you.

You wife only need yearly multi trip cover (some up to 90 days/trp )and can be had from as little as £25 a year.

Medical cover should be a minimum of £3m-£5m...... :o

I took out travel insurance a few years back for my RTW trip. Can't remember the exact amount, but it was not cheap. High coverage, flight evacuation, etc. And included coverage while in the US for visits under 30 days or so.

What I found out is that what you really need is flight evacuation. For everything else, you can get local services quite cheaply. And they are not that bad.

I visited hospitals in Nepal, Ecuador, China, and a few times in Thailand. All docs spoke great English (a few were US trained). And the prices were incredibly cheap. These visits involved stomach problems or for a few terrible colds I got while trekking.

So, for my upcoming trips, I am going to self insure. Including my trip to Thailand. I do however, have flight evacuation. It is part of my credit card. As long as I pay for the air flights with that credit card, I have air evacuation covered. Tough to beat and only costs me $100 a year...plus it is tied to a major airline, so I get mileage as well.

Just some thoughts....

Found an interesting thread on Lonely Planets Thorn Tree...some good info here! And some good reasons to get a good policy!!!
