OSAKA, July 2 - Japanese investors are satisfied with Thailand’s flood prevention plan and recovering economy with more investment likely in Thailand, said Industry Minister Pongsvas Svasti.

The minister travelled to Japan on a roadshow mission to Osaka from June 28-30.

About 400 Japanese investors attended a seminar on Thailand’s investment promotion policies held by the Board of Investment (BOI), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Japanese investors were satisfied with the Thai government’s water management and flood prevention plans and Thailand’s recovering economy, said the minister, adding that he was confident that more Japanese investors will invest in Thailand.

The Thai minister also met Eikei Suzuki, governor of Mie prefecture during the trip and learned that Japan will set up an office to assist Japanese investors in Thailand. This will help boost more investment of Japan’s small and medium enterprises (SME) in Thailand.

He said in the first five months of 2012, investment projects worth 370 billion baht sought privileges and it is expected that investment projects are expected to reach 600 billion baht for the whole year.

Meanwhile, Board of Investment (BoI) Secretary-General Atchaka Sibunruang said that governors of Mie will lead Japanese investors to seek investment opportunities in Thailand in July.

However, what Japanese investors are worried about is a lack of skilled laborers, so the BoI has worked with universities and vocational colleges to cooperate with Japanese companies to produce graduates that meet the qualifications of the labour market. (MCOT online news)

TheJaps will keep coming here because they can play golf anytime they want for laughable course fees.

They also have their private clubs here -about 500 -with lovely Isan & CM hostess girls and 500 b small bottle Singha or Kirin beer.

Or did around 10 specificallysay, 'We are happy with what you say you are doing.',

and the Minister is running with that intentionally ambiguous statement?

Good news but of course it will be seen as a negative by many posters who know better than both Thais and Japanese.

Well I may come across as negative but if 400 of them showed up for his obvious one sided talk why if they were satisfied with the work already being done.

Is he saying the Japanese investors are stupid and don't do do diligence before they invest. They just sit around and listen to a obviously biased speaker. Maybe it is not a matter of knowing better than them but a matter of knowing a little bit of what they are like.

The reality is that other than tanking in the industrial estates and dredging some waterways, nothing of the promised flood relief has really happened.

If the walls at the industrial plants can hold backs the water, there is still the small matter of getting goods and staff in and out as well as maintaining supplies of electricity, food and water.

In comparison with the previous government the Japanese understand how much better investment is under the current administration. There only concern is enough workers in this period of economic boom times in Thailand.

What is the difference in Japanese investment between now and the previous government? Why is it better?

The alleged reason for last year flood?

Thaksin was alleged to hog water for those paddy field he sold to the Arabs to grow rice.

He under estimated GOD, one of the only 2 persons that control the rain fall in Thailand.

Thailand is, once again, failing to attract too much high-level attention. Where the Japanese Industry Minister (or equivalent)? It would also be nice to hear this from the Japanese themselves (i.e. a quote from a Japanese publication or official, something, anything). It's very conspicuous that the Thai side is the only one talking. Sounds like business as usual for Thailand and the Thai government (save face, spew nonsense, wash, and repeat). The 370 billion baht could be an actual reduction in planned investment and it doesn't seem like there are any large projects in the pipeline for Japanese investors.

Currently, Japanese investors are the largest group of foreign entrepreneurs to invest in Thailand, and responsible for 45% of the investment projects, which applied for investment promotion measures from the BOI during the past 5 months. http://www.dredgingtoday.com/2012/06/28/thailand-presents-flood-prevention-plans-to-investors/

It is hard to believe the Japanese economy is one of the largest in the world. They must be really dummies investing in Thailand while Yingluck is in charge!

Hard to know if any of those folks who attended the Thai seminar in Japan are actually Japanese business people who have EXISTING investments in Thailand, as opposed to prospective ones.

As for the government's flood control plans, wasn't it the Federation of Thai Industries (or whatever that group is named) that popped up in the news media just recently saying that THEY were NOT confident in the government's plans and that many proposed flood control projects weren't proceeding on schedule.

Anyone who took time to read the article and not just the headline would see it wasn't a seminar about flooding or flood control and was about promotions for investing in Thailand.

It was in a downturn when the airport was closed due to some rabble but since Yingluck has been in charge it has been in an upturn. Who told you it was in a downturn? Certainly not the Japanese. They are coming on like gangbusters.

However, what Japanese investors are worried about is a lack of skilled laborers, so the BoI has worked with universities and vocational colleges to cooperate with Japanese companies to produce graduates that meet the qualifications of the labour market.

See how easy that was...almost like the BOI has a magic wand. I wonder if the statement meant some graduates or all that was needed? I expect the former.
