bkkjames Posted July 14, 2012 Share Posted July 14, 2012 Thais dont like farangs that cant understand the language - takes all the fun out of trying to make childish remarks about them as they walk by etc. Other types that qualify are the '70's rock n roll era' types that 45 years on, think that they need to tell everyone how big they were in some no name rock band in Southern California in the day. Excess tattoos, MMA t-shirts get high marks too. Wearing flipflops in the office is a definate no go zone for farangs and should be avoided at all costs unless you really want to be looked down upon. Wife beater tank tops in the bank won't garner you any extra points as well. Lastly, never ever hold a door open for anyone although it may go against everything you were brought up to believe as the right thing to do. Like: money input, foreign, international influence e.g. dressmode, music, food, feeling part of the global community. I.m.o. Thais are generally quite open-minded and welcoming to foreigners (if they behave well). Although my forum name is dutchguest, this does not necessarely mean I feel myself a guest. But not being Thai means you are something else, not autochtoon, but allochtoon. I think, generally, people living full-time in Thailand, emigrants, expats not like being (called) a guest, which might suggest a slightly inferior, temporary situation, while people on holidays or half-time living in Thailand don't have so much a problem with the word “guest”. For me there is no problem, as I often feel myself a guest, a tourist and a temporary visitor on this planet, so as well in Thailand as in Holland, an outsider, not really belonging to any society. The other reason is that sometimes they are arrogant:) Sometimes "farang" think they are above or better than us and also treat us bad or even look down on us,Thais. But actually, they are not better than us at some points. I am not saying all farangs are same but it does happen here and there nowadays. Thai people are quite similar too i admit. That's why there're words "like" and "dislike." There's word saying which i can't remember from where but yeah there's word saying " you are nobody there but somebody here" It could apply to attitudes of both sides, farangs and thais.
