Cruising

Does any one know if there is a travel service that could line one up with sailing from Seattle Washington, Portland Oregon or Vancouver British Columbia to Bangkok and back. I have a friend that could sail from any one of those ports preferably Vancouver.

I have heard of Cargo ships that carry passengers.

My friend is afraid of flying.

Besides one might find some interesting trips that way.

The cargo vessels that take passengers usually have a maximun 6 to 10 cabins. Depending on the line. Also cargo ships do not have stabalisers like cruise ships do. it could get a little rough. Check out cruise lines as well.

I was wondering if there was a place to go for all that information.

shot had a good sight.

No he is not a big guy wearing a lot of gold and I now realize the title could have been some thing like looking for cargo ships to sail on West coast USA to Thailand. and time does not matter.

I looked into this for my father who was unable to fly based on Doctors recommendations after experiencing 2 DVT's.

From the UK to Laem Chabang the trip Via Cargo ship would cost an estimated GBP £8000 return for both of my parents (£4000 each if I'm not mistaken) and take approximately 25 days.

Upon speaking with his Doctor again the 'flat bed' business class option became a far more viable option and he took that without further issue.

Perhaps your friends fear of flying might wane once the costs of travelling on a ship is considered.

Note that cargo ships usually carry less than 12 passengers. This is to get out of the international requirement to carry a doctor if there are more than 12 passengers on board. If your friend has any medical problems that can't be cured by the Second Mate and a rusty spoon he's better off flying.

LOL......good thing I don't have that fear, I could never go anywhere.

I am thinking Vancouver to Shanghai would be your best bet, by boat if you can find one, and then train from there?

Better him than me.....

Must be possible... my little bro went from London to Singapore by land

Not same-same......once you get across that little channel you have it's relatively easy, albeit quite far, to get to Spore.....the OP's friend has to cross the largest ocean in the world.

I thought it was only about 50 miles from Alaska to Russia.

This link http://wikitravel.org/en/Freighter_travel give a very broad outline. However down the bottom of the page it give a list of travel agents who specialise in freighter travel. You can check out each site using the links.

Royal Caribbean cruises do a relocation cruises from North America to Asia in the Autumn every year. Several other cruise liners do the same.

Get your friend to call them and ask about relocation cruises, or better still just go into a good old fashioned travel agent and get them to do the hard work.

with a name like hellodolly, starting a topic called Cruising could be asking for trouble.

Hello sailor would be even worse. laugh.png

I assumed the thread was going to be trolling about the vicinity of the Royal Marine Commando Club in Paddington.

His motivation was not a fear of flying... he just did it for a laugh

I met a guy in Thailand this year who had travelled from England by land and was continuing on to Singapore sounded like a top adventure

Wonder if this was your brother

Thanks guys good stuff. two really informative links and a lot of good ideas. I wonder if there would be a ship from Alaska to Siberia and then a long road trip. Sounds good and exciting. Now that I think about it the exciting part would let my friend out. His loss.
