Killing The Mekong Dam By Dam

Featured Replies

A cascade of hydro-electric dams is set to cause Irreversible damage to the greatest river in the region and affect the livelihood of millions who depend on it. Four dams have already been built along the Chinese stretch of the Mekong and 11 more have been mapped out downstream in Laos and Cambodia.

Tom Fawthrop's documentary, Killing The Mekong Dam By Dam is being shown at the Documentary Arts Asia Gallery tomorrow night (Sat July 21st) 7:00pm. This will be the very first screening of the extended edition of Tom Fawthrop’s latest film which was commissioned by Thai PBS. Tom (whose work often appears in The Guardian and The Economist) will introduce the film and take part in a Q&A discussion afterwards.

This should be well worth seeing! More details on the DAA website.

Very true. The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtse is a disaster in the making... and the Mekong is doomed. Short-term solutions for a long-term problem.....

Darn it I can't remember the name of the river and the lake. It is the river that flows into the Mekong from Siem Reap. Once a year there is so much water in the Mekong that the river backs up and reverses it's flow into the lake at Siem Reap which in turns doubles in size.

Will all these dam dam's stop that?

I think it is the tong le sap. not sure.

Yes, it's going to affect most of the river from northern Laos to the sea.

The Tonle Sap in Cambodia?

eggs ackely (if you understand the cultural reference...two points for you)

also..when the water flows back into the lake it transforms it into the worlds largest repository of fresh water fish (or so said a documentary that i watched some years ago)

Do you know if it will no longer reverse the flow. It would be a disaster their are villages on the water that depend on it. A floating school floating restaurants and even floating churches.
