Tabian Bann (House)Papers... Yet More Corrupt Practices

My Thai wife and I spend 3 months or so each year up just outside Khemmerat where we have a little property, I'm English, wife Thai, we have two children, aged 2yrs and one of 9months both born in UK but both applied for and got thai passports.

We took our olderst over at six months old and got her registered on the Thai House papers with little effort, the office staff were pleasant and very helpful; as my plans are clear we will be able to relocate to thailand within 5 yrs.

We returned a year later, last January, with both the kids and again applied for the youngest to be registred, well this time it seemed like lots of hurdles and no activity, the young girl on the counter said the 'head'would do it when he is ready, we were there for 6 weeks and he failed to sign it off, the junior clerks were clearly emabrrased as no valid reason was being given why he was too busy, eventually we had to leave without having retrieved the amended house papers.

My in-laws have been trying for the past seven months to get the papers, as of this week they were told they had to pay a 5000baht fee.

Its clear corruption is becoming very common place but this is ridiculous. I'm tempted to write to the UK Thai Ambassador to complain. Do you think any ministry in Central Government would take any notice?

Man that sux. In my country any issues with any form of service be it government or retail etc if its not good enough you can call the ombudsmen and usually problem fixed. Is there anything like that in Thailand? Anyhow any problems Ive had with any place in Thailand I just sik my wife onto em and usually they listen. Good luck with ya problem mate!

Yes, thailand has an Ombudsman and an anti corruption agency.

You can also contact the government information line and explain your problem and ask about the price. Call 1111.

I'm assuming the excuse for the problem is caused by it being the first registration of a Thai child born outside of Thailand.

In which case, a way round this is to register the child in a house book of a house in a more 'foreigner friendly' Amphur. There must be some family living outside of the problem Amphur office. Then moving the child from the other house book to the desired house book.

Cost of registering anyone in a house book is about 30bht.

It takes about 15 minutes to process the paperwork, while you wait.

Finally nearly a year later and after the previous head retired the new guy was rather pleasant, apologised for the 'mistakes' and handed over the papers.. what a country!!!
