Change Of Visa Status... Possible In Thailand?

I think the chances of getting a change of visa status to a B is quite low.

You should get the visa and work permit ASAP since you are now working illegally.

From Chiang Mai the lowest cost visa trip by air would be Nok Air to Udon Thani and then to Vientiane via Nong Kai.

Would that be better than flying directly to Vientiane?

Lao Airlines is the only option from Chiang Mai to Vientiane and I am not sure if they ever have seats available because when I check their website I never found any and you can be sure that they would probably be about double the cost verses flying to Udon.

For an ED-visa one often will be advised to apply for the visa abroad, while for conversion to a non-immigrant based on marriage to a Thai immigration will in most cases send you to Bangkok

My local immigration will convert to/issue an ED visa for the not insubstantial amount of 15,000 baht. Plus the actual visa cost!

Regardless of the financial contribution, what is the legality of this? Would a visa not issued by a consulate (or extension of such a visa) cause any problems with immigration officials at borders or airports? Or anywhere else?

Conversion is not a visa for border use and is immediately used on issue - they do not convert to multi entry visas - just single entry so no border issues. But at any time another immigration officer/office could question such issue - especially if it was issued for other than full time study at a top university (which I believe would be the only normal accepted exceptions). Highly advise not making such payments - people are losing there life savings every day due to blackmail/fixers; in most cases without having done anything wrong and to fake police - if you actually do something you could well be a target at some point.
