TARINKOT, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A roadside bomb struck a police vehicle in southern Afghanistan on early Friday morning, killing the district's police chief and five other police officers, provincial officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosion happened just after midnight local time when the police vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Sarab district of Uruzgan province, which is located in the southern region of Afghanistan that is plagued by roadside bombings.

A provincial spokesman said all six people in the vehicle were killed, including five police bodyguards and Sarab district police chief Ahmadullah. The victims in the vehicle were responding to an attack by Taliban insurgents at a security checkpoint elsewhere in the district, officials said.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, but gave no other details.
