Democrats slam Thaksin's criticism of court

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Former premier Thaksin Shinawatra was assailed yesterday for attempting to discredit the Constitution Court and criticising its verdict in the charter-change case.

Democrat Party MP Thepthai Senpong said that after the court ruling on July 13, Thaksin told his legal adviser he accepted the verdict even though he was not satisfied with every point made by the judges. But later, Thaksin and his cronies thought the verdict was an obstacle in their bid to amend the charter so they criticised the court through the foreign media.

Thepthai said Pheu Thai Party was seeking to amend the Constitution and he believed it had a plan to amend the charter in two steps. First, it will amend the articles that block its attempt to amend the whole charter such as Article 68 (paragraph 2) and Article 165 (paragraph 2) and once these are amended, the party would call a referendum to draft a new charter.

He said Pheu Thai could not amend too many articles because the procedure would be too lengthy and make amendments impossible. Besides, Thaksin couldn't wait that long for the Constitution to be changed in his favour, as he fears the current government may not complete its term.

Siam Samakki Group leader Prasarn Maruekpitak said Thaksin's remark against the Court's verdict was nothing short of confirmation that he was desperate to return home without having to face jail. Thaksin believed that the court's verdict on holding a public referendum to decide on amending the charter was an obstacle to his return.

"Thaksin is exploiting the red shirts by pushing them to intimidate the Constitution Court and using them to increase his bargaining power, and in the meantime he also pushes for charter amendment. His methodology does not benefit the government and the country but only brings about more conflicts,'' he said.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit denied that some party MPs met Thaksin in Hong Kong to lobby for positions in a possible Cabinet reshuffle. He said they went to wish Thaksin well on his birthday and there was no political significance.

He said Prime Minister Yingluck had not given a signal for a reshuffle, though he believed that Cabinet changes would happen after the House reconvenes for an ordinary session. He dismissed as nonsense reports that Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul would replace Yongyuth Wichaidit as Interior Minister. He said those who spread such rumours wanted to create infighting in the party.

He said the PM trusted Yongyuth and if he was removed from the post, that would cause a stir in the party.

Prompong admitted that there might be a change in the economic ministers but not Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, because the party believed he was doing well.

He knows how badly they do the job.

What is the main criteria to select a spokesman for PTP - credibility, or the ability to lie with a straight face?

That would be after Thaksin sycophancy, of course.

Seriously, both sides are just as bad when it comes to veracity. You guys are the puppets. Every time a Dem opens their mouth and says anything about Thaksin or the reds, you guys are jumping up and down flapping your arms saying the same things over and over. No wonder Thialand is such a disaster politically. When something doesn't work, you just bash it with a hammer in hopes that it will fit and yet are amazed when it not only fails to fit, but it's now broken. Time for a new tact.

Haha, and that somehow makes it alright. Like children fighting. He hit me first . . . Someone needs to step up and be the bigger man for once.

I'm sure that the views of Thaksin, the convicted-criminal fugitive, are extremely impartial and valid to the process of law.

"He was not satisfied." Who cares if he is satisfied or not, he should be in jail for life meaning life, picking the maggots out of old breadcrusts.

who cares? The red thugs who burn pictures of the judges and bring coffins. The parliament and government he controls.

Silly question: to speak what Thaksin is telling him to speak....

The red shirts aren't only intimidating the CC, but they are also attacking the Democrats in Chiang Mai, by blocking roads and throwing stones.

Yay for Red Democracy.

Omg, Thaksin and his cronies talked to the foreign media. What a crime, he is truly evil.

Sadly "the bigger man" wasn't to be disgraced former-PM Thaksin, he had his chances to be something better, but in-the-end turned out to be just another grasping Thai politician.

Even after the time-expired caretaker-PM was removed, he could have quit any further involvement in Thai politics as he promised to do, and would probably have been home by now, living a quiet-life and playing-golf with his buddies.

Instead he appears to continue to be a divisive force, stirring-up trouble and wanting to call-the-shots from afar, and thus delaying whatever shaky progress there might have been meanwhile, towards a slightly-more-robust democracy.

The courts must be wrong, because they once ruled against him, Q.E.D. wink.png

I think the point is that he "accepted the decision" in the Thai media, and then went and "criticised the court" in the foreign media.

Any suggestions?

Thailand doesn't seem to have any "big men" in the 'statesman' department.

It does have one 'amazing" man, but discussion is forbidden.

Haha, momma het hit me again . . . You just dint get it. I do get that Thaksin probably will be Thaksin. Probably cannot change him and even if he was dead the Dems would say he is some how influencing someone or causing something. It's your country. Run it into the ground if you want. So easy to see solutions as an outsider. You guys just live in the problem thereby creating bigger problems.

Yeah. Bad health though is a bummer.

Yeah, I have suggestions for over a year, but no one here has an open mind and it is about my bed time. I did post what I thought would be a start to fixing problem back around December 27 or so. Definitely a new attitude and the Dems are just setting themselves up to look weaker if Thaksin does return. They could feasibly use this stuff to their advantage.

That is probably just what the media made out of it.

And a Thai Democrat should have known by now that the foreign media always get it wrong.

No not both sides are as bad. No one in Thai politics is clean, no question, but what Thaksin is doing is worse than everything before in Thai history.

"Thaksin and his cronies thought the verdict was an obstacle in their bid to amend the charter" Get real! There are no obstacles for Taksin. His power is limitless. Even the thaivisa.com spell checker underlines his name in RED! (course, thaivisa comes up red, too). Thaksin moves in mysterious ways.

Thaksin and his cronies

typical phrasing of an unbiased, professional news agency of the highest caliber.

I take this back, it may have been attributed to the Democratic Party MP. It is sometimes hard to tell with unbiased, professional news agencies of the highest caliber.

Read it slowlysmile.png 1. There are no obstacles for Taksin 2. His power is limitless. Interpret that how you like, but I think it's clear that the Nation is not only NOT biased, but for some reason, they are once again holding back on telling the whole ugly truth.

I will be happy to use it if you can supply a better collective word for his various relatives, mercenary agitators and arsonists/terrorists, partners in corruption and the other members of this criminal conspiracy government.

Note that some will fit in to more than one category.

Thanks. Crystal clear now. :)
