LONDON, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- The British government will deploy an additional 1,200 troops to ensure security at the Olympic Games in London, Olympics Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Tuesday, raising the number of troops deployed for the event to more than 18,200.

Hunt said the decision was made by ministers at a meeting on Tuesday morning, five days after the British government decided to put 1,200 troops on standby for a possible deployment. "On the eve of the largest peacetime event ever staged in this country, Ministers are clear that we should leave nothing to chance," he said.

The new deployment raises the number of troops deployed for the games to about 18,200. "The Government continues to have every confidence that we will deliver a safe and secure Games," Hunt said, adding that security staffing levels at Olympic venues are being kept under constant review.

Earlier this month, security provider G4S admitted it was short of staff, resulting in the British government to deploy an extra 3,500 troops. G4S said Wednesday it now has a security workforce of approximately 5,800 personnel, and others are in the final stages of their training and accreditation process.

"We are grateful to the military for their support in securing the Olympic and Paralympic Games and will continue to work with them and LOCOG (London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) to ensure that the Games are safe and secure," G4S said in a statement.

The security provider also emphasized it will cover the additional costs relating to the military deployment.

The Summer Olympics will take place between July 27 and August 12, followed by the Summer Paralympics between August 29 and September 9. London has hosted the Olympic Games on two past occasions, in 1908 and 1948.

And this is from a government committed to reducing the military to a point where a troop of boy scouts could invade the UK and win.

Well done lads have free ticket to the Olympics. Sorry you won't be able to go as you will be working hard to keep the games safe.

When you have finished have a weekend off then bugger off back to Afghanistan and win the war there.
