Us Passport Renewal For Dual Citizen

Question:

--My 15 year-old son has a Thai and US Passport

--He entered Thailand on his Thai passport

--Needs to get US passport renewed while here

--If he presents his US passport for renewal at the US Embassy, but it does not have the Thai Visa stamp (because he used his Thai passport to enter), will that cause an issue? Does the US embassy even care if he has two passports like this?

Should not be any problem. It's the eligibility as a US citizen and not a Thai visa stamp that makes the difference. Just go renew using the renewal form. Thailand does not seem to care if a Thai child with Thai citizenship has two passports. The U.S. may ask the child at legal age what citizenship he will use, but doesn't seem to be a problem in anycase.

There is nothing in US law preventing dual citizenship. The only requirement is the use of US passport for entry into US if a citizen. There will not be any issue with renewal.

Just got renew the U.S. passport. They don't care about what stamps or lack of stamps are in the passport, where you have been in the world, etc. My wife is a dual citizen also...when you renew the U.S. or Thai passport you just renew each as if it was the only passport. No laws against dual U.S. and Thai citizenship.

Wait to renew until he's 16 and it will be good for 10 years instead of 5 years.

Better not wait, in my opinion. You never know when an emergency requiring travel might occur. It is best always to keep one's travel documents up-to-date.

A new passport from US Embassy takes about 10-14 days. You must make on-line reservation first.

You can apply at one of the ACS Outreach visits and wouldn't even have to visit the embassy/consulate. No appointment needed at an Outreach visit.
