ABERDEEN, MARYLAND (BNO NEWS) -- The mother of American baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr. was located safely Wednesday morning after being kidnapped at gunpoint the previous day, local authorities said. Police are still looking for an unidentified suspect.

Violet Ripken, the 74-year-old mother of former Major League Baseball players Cal Ripken, Jr. and Billy Ripken, was abducted from her home in Aberdeen, Maryland between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The suspect was carrying a handgun and forced Ripken into her own car.

After being forced into the car, Ripken was tied up in the backseat of the car and driven to Baltimore County, which is several miles (kilometers) from her house in Aberdeen. A witness reportedly noticed the suspect with Ripken and called police after the man told her she was his mother and he was simply driving her to the hospital.

"At about 6:15 a.m. this morning, Mrs. Ripken was located unharmed in her vehicle in close proximity to her residence," Aberdeen Police spokesman Lt. Fred Budnick said on Wednesday. "She was assessed by paramedics but was not injured and is now resting with family members."

The motive for the abduction was not immediately clear, and authorities have not yet identified the suspect. He is described as a white male in his late 30s or early 40s and was last seen wearing a light colored shirt, camo pants and eyeglasses. Police said he is armed with a handgun.

Ripken's son, Cal Ripken, Jr., is a member of the Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame. He holds the all-time record for most consecutive games played with 2,632 between 1982 and 1998. He played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles. His brother, Billy, played for four teams, including the Baltimore Orioles over his 12-year career, and is currently a baseball analyst for the MLB Network.
