PHUKET: -- A top-secret investigation has led to the arrest of one of Belgium’s most-wanted criminals in Phuket.

The suspect, named as Marc de Schutter, was reportedly wanted for murder, money laundering and economic crimes in his native Belgium.

His arrest by some 30 officers of the Crime Suppression Division and Chalong Police followed a one-month investigation launched at the request of the Belgian Embassy in Bangkok to Thai national police chief Priewpan Damapong.

A command center was established in Phuket to track down Mr Schutter, for whom an arrest warrant was issued on July 27.

Following a lengthy stakeout, Mr Schutter was finally taken into custody in a home off Saiyuan Road in Rawai early yesterday afternoon and immediately sent to Bangkok.

A press conference to reveal more details of the investigation and arrest is expected to take place later today in Bangkok.

Not the first one hiding here and for sure not the last one either ..... It seems its quite easy to "disappear" in Thailand . Well , when you have money everything is so easy. clap2.gif

It is pretty easy for criminals to 'disappear' in any country. The UK has 1000s of foreign criminals on the run. Neither the police or immigration have any idea where they are.

Again, very strange conclusion 'easy to disappear in Thailand', since the guy has just been caught.

Strange, according to another newssite he was presented to the media today in Bangkok. I must say that seems more logical, extradition already on the day of arrest would be extremely fast. Also the photo presented is quite convincing.

BANGKOK: -- Crime Suppression police and the Belgian Embassy on Tuesday announced the arrest of Belgian criminal gang leader suspect Marc De Schutter in Phuket's Muang district.

The 57-year-old fugitive was nabbed in front of a Tambon Rawai house on Monday along with two computer notebooks, a cell phone, and three document files, after the embassy asked Thai police to arrest him. De Schutter is claiming innocence.

He was arrest at a luxurious home in a lane off Saiyuen Road, Rawai, where he reportedly had been living for 17 months with a 24-year-old Thai wife.

Belgium’s fifth most wanted man, he is allegedly involved in major criminal cases in Belgium including thefts, fraud, murder of his own wife, drug smuggling, trafficking of illegal items (oil, cigarettes and war weapon) and money laundering. He allegedly had connections with criminal syndicates in Italy, Israel, Netherlands, Ireland and Armenia.

An investigation by the Belgian authorities found De Schutter fled to Phuket over a year ago and sometimes went on business trips to Singapore. They requested Thai police arrest him for extradition to Belgium.

Thai police nab Belgium's most wanted fugitive

image_20120731162447DC5A14FD-B4B7-6D8C-76A343C2C9FB1CE0.jpg

BANGKOK, July 31 - Thai police on Tuesday announced the arrest of Belgium's most wanted fugitive with outstanding arrest warrants in several criminal cases.

Marc de Schutter,57, was arrested at his home in Thailand's southern Andaman Sea resort island of Phuket.

He was brought to the news conference in Bangkok in the presence of Thai senior police officers and a Belgian embassy representative.

Mr De Schutter fled to Thailand in 2011. The Belgian Embassy asked for Thai police cooperation which led to the arrest.

The Belgian admitted that he was the person appearing on his country’s police list of most wanted fugitives, with outstanding arrest warrants for several cases. Mr De Schutter claimed, however, that he came to Thailand for business purposes.

Thai police confiscated his computer, a cell phone, and a bankbook as well as some documents that the suspect allegedly used to contact overseas crime syndicates.

Pol Maj-Gen Supisan Pakdinarunart, Crime Suppression Division commander, described Mr De Schutter as Belgium's most wanted criminal for the alleged murder of his wife and the embezzlement of an oil company for which a Belgian court ordered him to pay a fine of 20 million euro. In addition, he was also accused of involvement in the illicit drugs trade and casinos linked with overseas criminal syndicates.

Gen Supisan said the fugitive would be handed over to the Office of the Attorney-General for further action pending extradition. (MCOT online news)

It's not easy to disappear in Thailand. They scan your face at every single immigration point & they just arrested another high profile one.

This is another job well done by the BIB.

The guy was hardly trying to blend in was he!

A pity we can only see a tiny part of his pants, but they also seem quite colourful. Looks like a nice combination for the golf course.

Apparently it's easy to "disappear" in Europe from where so many of these "most wanted" types seem to have no problem eluding police or passing undetected through immigrations. On the other hand, given the number who are eventually arrested here, it seems the Thai police are better able to "undisappear" them.

If you want to escape the law, come to miracle Thailand! Should be a TAT slogan!

Apparently not, there have been quite a few of these arrests lately.

You are right Steven. The reason is not that the Thai police is specially smart but they cooperate with Belgium police which came in Phuket to find the guy.

Also, I'm pretty sure, there are some informers in every district and soi. Neighborhood know all about us. I don't complaint, it's even goo because it's something happens the informers will tell all the truth = you are a clear guy.

I don't think it's possible to hide in Thailand. Even in an anonymous condo in Bangkok.
