1,300 VILLAGES IN SURIN ARE SUFFERING WATER SHORTAGES.

About 1300 villages in Surin province are suffering shortage of water for consumption, while the province aims to solve the problem within 2008.

Natural Resources and Environment Official in Surin, Chaiwat Hengsanankul (ชัยวัฒน์ เฮงสนั่นกุล) said that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has implemented measures to solve water shortages so that villagers will have water for consumption. The province hopes to provide sufficient water for the people within 2007, and has implemented the measures in accordance to the government’s policies. The measures have been divided into three phases. During the first phase, plumbing system in the 16 pilot provinces have been fixed and modernized, while during the second phase, the officials will construct and fix the plumbing system in the remaining provinces within 2008. Then, the government will develop water sources to provide security for the plumbing system in the remaining villages, so that the water can be used in plumbing system sustainably.

Mr. Chaiwat said that the second phase of the measures will be implemented in 59 provinces beginning this year.

What a surprise. The Ministry does not know the difference between villages and provinces. Chaiwat doesn't say much either. What we need is local government not a local branch of central government.
