LONDON, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- A cyclist was killed Wednesday after being hit by an Olympic shuttle bus carrying journalists in east London, police said on Thursday. The driver was arrested and later bailed on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The accident happened just before 7:42 p.m. local time when a double-decker shuttle bus ferrying journalists between Olympic venues struck a 28-year-old cyclist at Ruckholt Road (A106) junction with the East Cross Route (A12), just outside the Olympic Park in the East London district of Stratford.

"Police and London Ambulance Service, including air ambulance, attended the scene," a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) said on Thursday. "The cyclist, a man aged 28, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:14 p.m. Next of kin have been informed, but formal identification awaits."

Police later identified the victim as 28-year-old Daniel Michael Harris of Ilford, a town in East London. He was not an Olympic competitor, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). An autopsy on Harris is scheduled to take place on Friday.

The driver of the bus, who was only identified as a 65-year-old man, was arrested at the scene of the accident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was taken to an east London police station and was later bailed pending further inquiries to a date later this month.

The unfortunate death of anyone is sad news ... but especially sad when there is a connection to the Olympics which is supposed to inspire us to give us some National pride but also with the goal to inspire us to rediscover our love of sport and get personally active.

RIP Daniel Michael Harris of Ilford ... wai.gif
