Hi,

Just a quick question im sure someone can answer. Whats a thai likely to pay for rent for a very basic room considering they have a small wage i.e in the region of 4,000baht. I know usually they rent a room and share with a couple of people but i just need to know roughly the price of a room in Pattaya??

This sounds like you are a farang who has never been to Pattaya. If so I think you would find one of these "basic" rooms very uncomfortable indeed, but if you really want to try it, I think about 1000 baht a month would do.

apartments generally rent about 2k to 6k baht a month depending on whether they have air/con or fan.

...uncomfortable?

I have lived in the like for about 7 years now. seems ok to me. kind of like a dorm room.

..hey! just realized. ..I hit 400 posts.

No the rooms not for me, just trying to figure out how a thai can afford to pay 2k-3k a month for accommodation if there wage is under 5k a month, obviously they have no choice but to share. Seems harsh having to share your room for long periods of time, i say this because i like my space and id hate to think what happens if they want to bring a bf home for some intimate moments with a room full of girls.

Then again ive heard Thai's hate living alone and one of the posters above claims hes lived like this for 7 years and is happy enough, im sure there would be plenty of stories to share and laughs. Interesting though.....

You have to take into account that the vast amount of BG come from very poor families and are more than used to sharing very small living areas.

I would have thought 2 to 3 k a month is probably in the tight ball park.

2,000 to 3,000 baht per month for the room is about the going rate but this doesn't include electricity. Any way, with only a fan the electricity bill is likely to be minimal.

The local ladies do go in for sharing, maybe up to 5 of them, but think about what they do. It's very unlikely that all 5 of them will be sleeping in the same room at any one time!

English is never the language of love .. in French the shag pad is a Garconiere....basicaly a studio apartment where you took your conquest .... or student you are sponsoring through university for a little R&R . the rules are if you see a friend of someone you know entering or leaving the Garconiere it is very bad form to aknowledge it or mention it every one must play the game.

This is the way it works in Tunisia , Algeria, Morocco etc quite refined and very subtle .. and gentile .

But we are stuck with a shag pad ! ( by the way I agree it does sound like one ) .

For a dingy small room 1500 is about right...2000-2500 will get a slightly better room....Most girls do share with others to keep costs down...Sometimes 4 of them share a room in a hotel...the monthly rates are cheaper...so for around 4000-5000 they can share a decent room with A/C, TV and fridge. And yes, Thais are very social so a lot do share for companionship.
