Thailand misses London Olympics medals target

BANGKOK, Aug 10 -- Thailand has missed its London Olympics medals target, set earlier, and there should be a review of the performance of the Thai national athletes in the London Olympics to ensure better preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, according to a senior government sports official.

Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Suwat Sidthilaw said Thailand targeted gaining at least two gold medals from the Olympics but missed the goal due to various factors.

A meeting to review the performance of the athletes was needed as in many sports, Thai squads narrowly missed gaining gold and bronze medals in taekwando, weightlifting and boxing, he said.

He said Sports Science is now playing important role in sports. Minister of Tourism and Sports Chumpol Silapa-archa and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra agreed to apply more Sports Sciences in building performance of athletes.

Thailand won one silver medal from 58kg weightlifter Pimsiri Sirikaew and a bronze medal from Chanatip Sonkham in the women's taekwondo under-49kg category.

Thai boxer Kaeo Pongprayoon secured at least a bronze medal and was to fight David Ayrapetyan from Russia in semifinal round of the Light Flyweight category Friday night.

Mr Suwat said it was proposed that higher financial allocations for programmes to prepare Thai Olympians would be more effective to drive performance of Thai athletes rather than giving rewards after they won the medals. (MCOT online news)

Congratulations to the Thai medal-winners, and all the athletes they sent to London, they tried their best, which is what it's about. thumbsup.gif

I was at the Olympic stadium yesterday and can confirm that even the athletes that came in last were given a tremendous amount of support. Of course the British athletes got the loudest cheer, but no one was disrespected..

It starts with building facilities for the athletes, Great Britain has done this well, with no-one pocketing any cash, all done transparently, and look at the results.

I remember a few bosses saying they would resign if their stars did not get the medals they reckoned on, well people put your money where your mouth is, and start packing your bags.

Another area is football, when will Thailand learn that in your national game you should not rely on players from other countries, when you see the team sheets it seems to be packed of non Thai players, if a rule was made then younger kids would realise that they have the opportunity to play in the Thai League if they are good enough, and not have to fight to get a place against a non Thai player.

Great Britain - the greatest sporting nation on the face of the planet.

Based on gold medals won so far (per capita), I think that is correct. smile.png

Not even close, per capita we (Brits) come in at number 16...

Grenada, Jamaica then New Zealand top the per capita list...!smile.png

It's all the fault of that Usain Bolt fella. sad.png

We are 7th, not 16th. I did mention gold medals.

Useful link though. :)

Any chance Thailand can make up the gold metal deficiency in the winter Olympics?

But congratulations to those that went and those that won.

Lets not forget all those dedicated athletes that are about to compete in the para olympics. Some truely amazing people involved there. I am sure Thailand will be represented.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin said

"The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

Mind you wiki also has (without further source rolleyes.gif )

"Coubertin believed "contact with women's athletics is bad for [the male athlete], and that these athletics should be excluded from the Olympic program""

For those more interested in medals, here statistics from 2012 and 2008 and in absolute/relative wink.png

Lets be a little bit more sympthetic to Thailand! They do not have the financial support of sport and have a poor infasructure throughout the whole school system. They also have a very weak elite athletic support system and athletes who can compete, at a world level. Have a look at the GB Olympic squad and most are middle to upple class sportspeople. Most Middle to Upper Class people here can't walk more than 10 metres without a rest. Those that are Olympic hopefulls here just chase the money any manyThai Olympic medalist in the news here, talk about how many million Baht they have made. They lose the importance of being an olympic athlete and the sporting competion and competivtness. It si all about money, sadly. With this mentality they will always be inferior to many nations, along with the poor support of professional and local sporting competitions and coaching development. Thai Ahletes like other athletes around the world, should represent their country and be proud to do so, not looking for financial gain

There are some good athletes around in Thailand, they just need support and if Thailand is ever to be a nation of contention, then a whole new ideolgy need to take place.

Thailand could have done better but at least they did win medals for their country. Thai athletes like all the olympians that come to compete, are the best of their country and put their heart and soul into the competition to make their country proud. Nobody mentions of course the USA, leader in both Gold and total medal count. Rock on America!

And that unfortunately is the bottom line, there is no money in the Olympics, only huge outlays.

Me thinks that most Thais do not care much about the olympics

In my neck of the woods here. the only sports I ever see then watching

are table tennis, badminton, TaeKwondo and Boxing.

A quick search shows Thailand only sent about 35 athletes to the

summer games this year.

If the people running the Thai olympic committee are as bad as the

people running the country we can imagine a large part of the issue

is the money does not get put into sports, unless you count pocketing

money as a sport

Very well explained.

Now can you also explain why we should be sympathetic for something that is clearly self-inflicted.

Thailand is not a HUB of Olympic gold, I guess.rolleyes.gif

No, but Great Britain is!

Out of topic but the Britt's have done fantastic, congratulations. thumbsup.gifwai.gif

well they have entered more athletes than any other nation

But they do have to qualify to enter. The home nation always has the most entrants, but it doesn't mean they are going to win anything.
