When we left England in Feb 2006 we had nothing booked, just the tickets from London to Paris. 2.5 years later I think we only booked hotels when we were flying into a country. We never had to sleep outside (unless we chose to), but sometimes you have to settle for a less than nice hotel. My advice is to carry:

Small water purification kit (Katadyn) if you are going to be heading off the beaten path a lot

Packets of tissues

A silk sleeping liner (for those nasty moments)

Outside of that it is a small amount of clothing, your camera, passport and, maybe, a Netbook/Pad. The less you carry the happier you will be.

Where do you intend to travel to?

If Thailand why do you intend to travel when the weather is crap?

How old are you?

What do you expect from a holiday?

How much do you have to spend?

How long are you expecting to stay?

What nationality of passport do you have?

Only 10 days in Thailand and only 10 is South America is not much. You could spend months in these general areas and never see everything.

After these places, where will you go? It's a loooooooong way from Thailand to SA, and quite an expensive flight for only 10 days.

Are you doing a round the world trip? If so, this site has great info (good info for travel in general also):

This guy is one of the tops for traveling:

Good place to read about people doing what your looking to do:

Another great website for research:

Sites I use extensively during my travels:

http://www.hostels.com/ (there are many like this)

Come back to us with your proposed itinerary. Basically, where you would like to travel and for how long. Doesn't have to be detailed, just an overview. I'd recommend a trip to your local library and checkout some travel guides for the various countries you plan to visit. Lonely Planet is great as they have a variety of itineraries laid out for you. Great for research.

With that being said, this forum is for Thailand only. We're happy to help with Thailand and the nearby countries, after that, you're better off elsewhere. Like Lonely Planet.

£20,000!!! We traveled for 2.5 years for 2 people with £37,000. For your money we could roughly travel for 1.25 years for 2 people including flights across major water. 2 weeks, 1 person. Crazy.

It's your money and up to you how you spend it......

10 days is not very long to see much in Thailand, I do note that he already appears to be getting into the Thai way.

Namely....'I've just got some extra money, now how can I spend it'.

Good luck and don't get stuck in the first bar you enter for 10 days.

If you only have 10 days I would pick 1 spot and stay there becuase running all over Thailand trying to see a lot will waste a whole lot of your time , You can hop from hotel to hotel if you want but from city to city is a lot of wasted travel time. Figure out if you want a place like Pattaya or Chang Mai or whatever and then just go and have fun in and around that area. You could get on a bus and go around Thailand but I don't see how fun that would be unless you had more time. But maybe thats just me. However from Bangkok about 2 hours drive are many places to go. Hua Hin. Pattaya , Cao Yai , ect. So maybe renting a car would be good for you to explore a little and save time over waiting on public transportation.

There might be a lot to see but most of it looks pretty much the same when it's all said and done. The differences are pretty minor , Cao Yai is more rolling hills and Hua hin beach, Issan countryside ect ..... But it's all still Thailand

I have been to over 100 different places here and they are so similar it's more of a chore to go someplace new than a fun thing to do anymore. Just pick what you like as in beaches , full moon partys , wine country like Cao Yai , little more upcale like Hua Hin and stick with it would be my advice , if you decide to spend time and money exploring you will find it's so similar it's not really worth the time or money for a 10 day trip....... unless you rent a car.

I guess the renting of a car would be my best advice for you if you really want to explore. Buses trains ect are cheap and all but not nearly as comfortable or flexable as your own car.

Personally I would book a room for 10 days at a 4-5 star resort and just enjoy myself and the things in and around that town.
