Brazen Daylight Theft- What Would You Do?

I have to wonder if some people on this thread actually know anything about Thailand outside places like Pattaya.

Out in the country, people leave all sorts of stuff outside their house gates. I've even seen an industrial concrete mixer on the street- according to some posters, the owner should move it into the house for safety, or perhaps he should move it into the carport and leave his car on the street!

In my wife's village most people grow vege gardens on the road verge, secure in the knowledge that no one is going to take the veges.

If you don't want to answer the question I asked, why are you even wasting time on this thread. Surely there are other posts much more deserving of your scintillating wit, not.

So was it something valuable that was taken - like an industrial concrete mixer? Mind you, that would be a bit heavy to 'run off' with...

In post #50 I already said it wasn't valuable, but useful ( and difficult to replace ), but tht's why the beggars nicked it..

For anyones info, I , don't live in Pattaya.

House in Bangkok has a few things outside the gate, eg, those water containers with the scoop, old fashioned idea of providing water for travellers I suppose, nowadays just symbolic. If it was stolen I would say what was stolen.

I for one, and, I don't think I'm alone cannot understand the OP's reason for the great secret.

Its v relevant! Nobody in their right mind would leave something outside their boundary that was important to them and easy to take away...

To Summarize then:

It's too big to fit in the house

but not too big for a man and woman on a motorbike to carry away

It's not valuable

It's useful

It's difficult to replace

Come on guys & gals let's have some guesses

But it is relevant. ask anyone you're question and everyone, like here, asks what it was then they could say what to do about it!

Answers would then be given on what it was. Not worth the hassle or worth the hassle.

You don't want to say what it was because you know what people would say about leaving it out.

I think you're answer is move on, forget about it and don't leave stuff outside anymore. There are far worse things that could happen, especially as you are in the village areas.

I don't get what the big deal is about saying what it was they took? It's all a bit cryptic, if it was too big to have inside your property then how did two people on a motorbike ride off with it?

You wouldn't have workers huts on the side of the road, thats public property, they would be on your property fenced or not.

Sorry, thought I'd already replied to this.

They used a m'bike with a side car to transport it.

<You wouldn't have workers huts on the side of the road, thats public property>

REALLY!!!!! LOL.

I'd love to see you fit the huts inside the property, which is little bigger than the house, and, unless the family can "own" the public road, the huts are definitly not on their property as they are on some wasteland the other side of the road from the house, and no, they definitely don't own the wasteland.

Mother-in-law?

Nope, does not qualify: 'It's useful'

To reiterate: the question was "what would you do" in the situation I described, which was that someone was actually driving away with some property, and should I have attempted to physically stop them, or to call them nasty names in Thai. It wouldn't make any difference if it was valuable or not.

The FOLLOW UP would have depended on the value of the item ( go to the police etc ), but I wasn't asking about that.

And, it was not possible to have the item inside the house grounds, as it was being used in its location, where it had been for over a year ( so, not the porn collection then ).

Wife?

One would hope not: 'It's too big to fit in the house'

Good point. biggrin.png

But surely anything that is too big to fit in the house, is too big too run off with so easily?

I recently said <, as it was being used in its location, where it had been for over a year > so why would it necessarily be too big to fit in the house?

You guys might not want to answer the question, but at least don't make up stuff.

This is the most pointless thread I have read in a long time !!

On the subject though, someone said something to me the other day, how should I have reacted ??

It's irrelevant what they said...

Just answer my question :)

Sorry l haven't read all the stuff here but it is common knowledge in LOS that if you leave anything outside your boundary, it is for the poor folk to take away on their rounds to earn a few baht. smile.png

that's the reason why i park my cars within the boundaries.

You would have been better off being polite and asking them to return the items and explaing to them it wasnt trash ..... giving them an easy way out to save face and pretend it was all a misunderstanding ...... being rude NEVER improves a situation although sometimes in the end you might previal inspite of it.

I kind of doubt you will accept anything except except high praise for your behavior though.

What I would have done is get back the items by doing pretty much the opposite of what you did.

please sir, may you return my items.

give me a break, there was a theft occurring here.

No actually their were items that were on the side of the road that many people would assume were being discarded , possibly thieft , even then being polite would have served him best in Thailand. Did you think it was the flat screen TV getting some sun by the side of the road or some stuff that could be mistaken for junk ?

he yelled at them as they drove off, so not stopping makes it a theft.

one mans junk is another mans treasure

Unless the "Item" was a motorbike or something that belongs in the street, then I think the OP is trolling.

No Thai person i've ever met would leave valuable items out in the street. My Thai family wouldn't even leave what I consider to be "trash" out in the street (ie old bits of metal, or scrape wood etc...)

I suggested getting a plastic bottle recycling bin at our condo; everyone looked at me like it was crazy...because, according them, someone would come round and nick the plastic bottles...(hmm...isn't that the point?)

There's an old English saying "Where there's muck there's brass".

I used to throw away my empty beer bottles, newspapers, plastic and cardboard but my TGF put a stop to that. She would hoard everything and once every few weeks (depending on consumption) she'd call the recycling lady who would turn up on a motorcycle-sidecar outfit with some scales and some heavy duty sacks. Everything would be sorted, bagged, weighed and priced and my GF kept the proceeds - sometimes several hundred baht.

When she wasn't looking I put an (unopened) five kilo bag of rice on them and it apparently only weighed 4.6 kilos. Either her scales were out or the shop had ripped me off, I wonder which? whistling.gif

Dont worry this is normal, I bought some Thai Watsadu 4mx3m tarpaulins yet strangely when I opened them out in my 4mx3m room they were about half a metre short all round?3.5mx2.5m.

Im sure the simple explanation is Thai metres are different to Metric metres and the same will apply to your Kilos, its obviously a "Thai Kilo"

You gotta love it sometimes aint yer!!

Couldn't possibly comment on how I would react as I don't know what the item was. You may think its irrelevant but to put ourselves in the situation we need to know.

Go on tell us, there is a real air of mystery about this item.
