When Do I Have To Cross The Border?

Featured Replies

:o I have a quadruple tourist visa which means I can enter the Kingdom 4 times. My first time runs out on the 2nd March which will mean I've been in the Kingdom for 2 months. I thought my visa was valid for 3 months? Do I have to cross the border to get this type of tourist visa renewed? And when do I have to do it by? Many thanks!

Before 2 March.

You have the choice of leaving and returning on the next entry for another 60 days or extending your current 60 day entry for another 30 days with a visit to immigration, 4x6cm photos and 1,900 baht. Check your visa expiration date for when you have to use up your four entries as you will not be able to use the visa after that date even if you have entries unused.

Just out of curiosity, where was the quadruple tourist visa issued? and what is the expiration date in comparison to the issue date?

Sure it's not a multiple entry, not quadruple?

OK Turtle.

A tourist visa allows stays of 60 days per entry, as previously mentioned you can extend each stay by 30 days by visiting immigration, after which you must cross a border to trigger the next entry. You trigger a new entry every time you cross a border, even if you've only been in Thailand 1 day.

So you should theoretically get 4x90 day stays.

BUT

What is the 'must use by' date on your visa, your last entry must be made on or before this date, you cannot enter after the use by date even if you've not used all four entries so you could end up wasting entries.

BTW as others have asked, where did you get a quad entry tourist visa, the most i've heard of is a triple.

Penang "used" to and I asked because I was curious if they had resumed the practice.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I got the visa from Birmingham Thai Embassy in England.

I was told at Immigration that I can only extend for 30 days once ????? Confused!

Each 60 day entry stamp can be extended for 30 day one time (with immigration approval).

Brum is a Consulate (not an Embassy), not that it matters to this discussion :D

Please check and report the 'must use by' date on your visa as this will determine whether making extensions at immigration is worth it. You may find that you've run out of visa validity before you run out of entries :o

I think the way a multiple entry tourist visa works is,...

For example: Visa issued for 180 days

Note: With a tourist visa, a foreigner can only stay in Thailand for 60 days at a time.

Note: The extension is only needed when the expiration date of the visa is reached or can be requested to extend each 60 day period

The foreigner enters Thaialnd with his new visa. 60 days later he has to leave Thailand at one of the authorized borders:

1. He gets an exit stamp from Thailand

2. Enters the other country. If Cambodia or Laos, the visa is expensive. If Myanmar, it is only $5.

3. When the foreigner is ready to return to Thailand, he gets an exit stamp from that country and reenters Thailand.

4. Thai immagration will see the visa is a multiple entry visa and not charge to reenter.

5. They will stamp your passport with the date of reentry and a date (60 days in the future) to leave (which you can extend for 1900 baht).

If the foreigner wishes to extend his orginal 60 days for 1900 baht,...he can. The extension is for 30 days. Each period of 60 days can be extended out to the orginal expiration date of the tourist visa.

The Tourist Visa Stamp in my passport (which I received from the Thai Consulate in Brum) says, ''this visa must be utilized before 21st Jun 06''

The 22nd June must therefore be the start of my fourth entry then? Meaning I'm okay to stay here until the 21st August?? Or do I have to have applied for a new visa before June?

No way! "Quadruple" means "four"? Thanks for the information, Cupcake.

Turtle. You MUST re-enter Thailand on or BEFORE 21st June to get the 60 day entry, 22nd will be too late.

Pretty much yes, when you re-enter the kingdom you will get a 60 day stamp.

Remember the Thai visa is a permit to ENTER the country, you can arrive on its last day of validity and still get your 60 days.

When you enter on 21st June, your passport will be stamped with “Admitted 21 JUN 2006 until 19 AUG 2006”
