Flight to Udon, bus to Nong Khai, then to Vientiane. Passport into Embassy in morning, pick up following afternoon. Am I reading you correctly. Or flight directly Bangkok to Vientiane. I live in the north Sahatsakhan/Kalasin and go by bus regularly, to Nong Khai border crossing. Six hours from home and I am in Vientiane.

When I was doing all that crap from Bkk, I'd do it in a day to Aranyapratet and back. Take the very early (6am) train (47baht) from Bkk then tuk tuk to border and back, then Goverment VIP bus back to Bkk.

If it's just a border run you need you can get a taxi driver to take you to Aranyaprathet and back for (I guess) about 3000 baht if you negotiate in advance or use a visa run company for about 2000.

A couple of visa run companies advertise in Bangkok Post, easy enough to do a border run in a day for 2,000 Baht.
