Does anyone have any experience of applying for a vis to Japan for a Thai citizen. Had a quick look at the visa website and it seems fairly straightforward, but the application form asks for contact details of a guarantor in Japan. What's that all about? And what do you put if you're just going for a few days and don't know anyone in Japan.

It seems like almost every government the world over hates Thai people. It is just such a hassle even trying to book a simple holiday. Now I really appreciate the fact that I have a UK passport. If I see a bargain flight I can't book it because of the visa situation and then the bargain will be long gone by the time the visa is given. What a sad world we live in.

But on the plus side, I'm saving a fortune on not booking flights and hotels. LOL.

There are like 88 countries (about 40% of the world's total) that Thais can visit either without a visa at all, or a by obtaining a visa-on-arrival first.

If Japan makes your Thai citizen spouse/friend's life difficult, try South Korea instead. South Korea grants a 90-day stay without a visa to Thai citizens upon arrival, no questions asked.

Don't worry about the guarantor in Japan question, if you don't know anyone there this is not likely to be a reason for visa refusal - just don't fill it out. I heard last week that Japan was considering waiving visa requirements for Thai citizens in the near future. After all, it only seems reasonable that Japan reciprocrate given that Japanese citizens can enter Thailand without a visa for 30 days when flying in, something they've been entitled to for years.

Also, have you ever thought of just taking a trip down to Malaysia, Vietnam or Laos? These neighboring countries are all fascinating and present no hassles at all for Thais since they don't require visas for any of those countries.
