doppa
on late friday evening i had a problem that needed the services of a 'the best international hospital in chiangmai' and it's euroligist. i was admitted to the hospital that night, only to be informed the following day , that all the eurologists in THAILAND were at a 3 day conference in pattaya, yes all of them, not one hospital in the country had a euroligist on call........c'mon are you serious! the upshot of it all that i had to wait friday night, saturday night, until the guy returned from pattaya on sunday night, straight from the airport he came to the hospital and performed the operation. apparently my condition was deemed to be 'not an emergency', i guess that means life threatening, even though i was passing some blood in my urine and in severe pain. then came the bill, that's another story! so, write last weekends dates into your diaries and make sure you avoid falling ill on them. CMX
Consider too how many Thais - in absolute numbers - have been similarly treated forever, now. Ludicrous is too mild a word, if there are not alternatives!

Ludicrous is too mild a word, if there are not alternatives! Could be worse there are countries that don't even have One euroligist.Or is it urologist I only post this so people do not get the idea that there is a specialist on call 24 hours a day in all hospitals or even in all cities. I think if my health was failing I would move back to Canada if it was some thing as hard to find a specialist in as what ever Doppa has. Doppa Good luck on your return home. I hope you find the proper service where ever home is.

Ricardo
I'd say that takes the bloody piss mak mak! And after I had nobly passed-up the opportunity, to point out that there had been nobody to take the piss, being the problem ! Glad that you're now OK, Doppa . gamini
I had an even more ridiculous experience at the Sao Paulo Hospital in Hua Hin some years back. I was admitted and in severe pain from food poisoning. I asked for something to relieve the pain and they told me that it had to be prescribed by a doctor. They said there was no Doctor in the Hospital but one would come in later. I waited three hours before the Doctor came. Such is Thailand
NancyL
In many ways, the private Thai health care system reminds me of our (really bad) U.S. system. I had a cardiac problem in Ann Arbor, Michigan and had a similar experience in being admitted on a Friday afternoon -- i.e. being told all the doctors were off at a "conference" (i.e. golf outing/entertainment session) in Arizona. Remember- Ann Arbor is a major cardiac center in the U.S! Sure, I wasn't in danger of dying, but meanwhile I was in a critical cardiac care unit for several days. Finally the doctor returned, did his little procedure and I went home the next day. It could have been done Friday night for me to return home on Saturday, but such is medical care in the U.S. (and Thailand). Meanwhile the $$$ added up and people wonder why health care costs so much in the U.S. Edited August 28, 2012 by NancyL
