Difference Between Online Luggage Weight Upgrade Vs Airport For A.a.

Recommended Posts

I want to upgrade my weight allowance on an international Air Asia flight. Online it will be 1400 baht to upgrade from 20kg to 25kg.

Does anyone know how much price difference there will be if I have to do it at the airport instead ? I'm not sure how much weight I will actually be carrying when I finally get to the airport. (And put all the heavy things into my cabin bag whistling.gif )

Ok.....this brings me to my next point.....Air Asia seem to purposely mislead people about luggage weight. As far as I know, the luggage prices are cumulative. For instance, the cost of 30kg is 920 + 1150 + 1425 + 1950.

From that website:

Check-In Baggage (Pre-book) :

International (up to 15kg)

THB 920

International (up to 20kg)

THB 1150

International (up to 25kg)

THB 1425

International (up to 30kg)

THB 1920

International (up to 35kg)

THB 2425

International (up to 40kg)

THB 2850

Check-In Baggage (Airport counter)

International (up to 15kg) THB 1500

Check-In Baggage (Airport counter)

The cost for 30kg is THB1920 TOTAL, anything over this weight will be charged, at the airport, their excess fee per kilo.

If you do not book luggage online you will be charged, at the airport, THB1500 for 15kg then the excess fee per kilo for anything over the 15kg.

You do not say where you are travelling from/to, I am quoting the fees you have posted.

Thanks UbonOz.....I had an idea the prices were cumulative. Perhaps it is because I was seeing their separate charges per leg of the journey......BKK to KL, then KL to Gold Coast.

Yes, doing a sample spoof booking with 30 Kg as part of the initial booking is 720 baht for DMK-KUL (post 1 Oct 2012) and 1,200 for KUL-OOL for a total of 1,920 for DMK-OOL, and of course another 1,920 for OOL-(KUL)-DMK.

I am pretty sure it is always cheaper to pre-pay with Air Asia, pop-up window says "Save up to 50% for on-line discount for check-in baggage".

Frankly I find Air Asia a poor airline with everything hidden. They work out the same cost in many instances when compared to a normal (non budget) airline by the time you buy refreshments, get an extra 5kgs plus you can always get a complimentary say 3kgs, seating is very cramped (at 6'3") and a skybridge for entry and exit for time convenience. It is not cheap and not comfortable unless you are Asian and under 5'9", weigh less than 70kgs and carry a back pack only, and are on a non food/drink diet and not on a time schedule. Air Asia - the smoke and mirrors airline.

Air Asia are far from a "smoke and mirrors" airline.

They are a self proclaimed "Budget" airline.

There are times when their flights (talking BKK DMK -OOL via KUL) with all the add ons come quite close to Thai Airways prices.

And there are times when you can pay 40% less.

They are not for everyone.

However, I do use them when I can get a flight on the above route for $520 (includes food / pick a seat / insurance) with good connection times.

I admit I have never flown Air Asia but I suspect, based on their growth, that many millions of customers have flown them, and that many provide repeat business. I further suspect that consumers are savvy enough to figure out the total costs on Air Asia, and compare those with other carriers, after balancing routing, schedule. I think for the newer generations of air travelers Air Asia provides a more than acceptable alternative, one which offers them significant value. I think that older consumers, and I place myself in this category, used to legacy providers and all in pricing often react negatively to the Air Asia/LCC model, perhaps even as a result of feeling abused by the a la carte pricing, and maybe getting burned once. To quote the Doctor in the famous joke, who's patient informs him that it hurts when he does "this" --- "Don't do that". ;)

I'd like to ask a quick question about checking in. I've only done a web check-in once. If I do this, is there any reason I should not be able to take a little more than 7kgs in my carry-on baggage ? After all, by web checking-in, a person is circumventing the check-in counter....

You might get away with it, but I believe you still have to present to the Document Check/Baggage Drop-Off Counter as per ........

5. For guest(s) departing for Australia: the self check-in pass will be printed with a notification “THIS IS NOT A BOARDING PASS”. This pass is not a valid boarding pass, guest(s) must proceed to the Document Check/Baggage Drop-Off Counter for Advance Passenger Processing (APP) approval after which a boarding pass will be issued.

from AA website

I guess they could I SPY your hand luggage at that point ?

Never had our hand luggage checked in possibly ten years using Air Asia.

Come to think of it, never been checked by any airline.
