How many times can I enter Thailand with an ED visa? Do they come in different types, e. g. one entry ED visa, two entry ED visa and so on?

Single or multi which is valid for one year of up to 90 days stays. But most cases will be single entry and then one year or 90 day extensions of stay during study.

Ah, ok.

Helpful as always, lopburi3.

I think I might go up to Vientiane this time to get myself a double entry visa but the next time I might opt for an ED, work or business visa.

What bugs me about going to Vientiane is basically when I have the double entry visa I cannot leave Thailand as often as I like.

Let's say I would like to go down to Penang, KL or Singapore, I guess with the double entry visa I cannot do that, or I will use up the re-entries.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Seems to me like other people do not extend their visas, they just go down to Penang every two months to get a single entry visa, which might have been a better option for me to, only I already have an extension in my passport : )

Feed the back, Sir : )

Not sure how you intend to obtain the other types of visas unless you plan study, work or business travel but any entry can be kept alive by using a re-entry permit for return to continue the current permitted to stay period. It adds no time but does allow travel and return without a new visa.

Your comment: “single entry and then one year or 90 day extensions of stay during study” I have just begun my ED Visa with the extension coming up in early October, paperwork supplied by the school (full course 180 hours). I was told that there is a single extension of stay completing a full year from date of entry but, with 90 reports rather than extensions. chay may?

It depends on type of education and where obtained. Most part time study of Thai will not get more than a 90 day extension so a new TM.7 and 1,900 baht payment with school attendance paperwork would be required every 90 days (and if you do not exit Thailand a 90 day report on TM.47. If you receive a one year extension then only the TM.47 90 day reports would be needed.

Great thanks. I should have mentioned I am taking Thai lessons at Pro Language in Chiang Mai. The paperwork I got from the school when I got my visa in Vientiane said my course would take one full year (technically) to complete. Since I am taking their "full" course of 180 hours, I believe that qualifies for a one year extension. Anyway, thanks for the info. I'm a cheapskate and would like to save the 1,900 baht times 3 (I think)

Aha. So can I apply for a re-entry permit when I have a double entry visa and by doing so not "spending" one entry?

AFAIK, it should be the same, like with a extension to stay, or being on the last (single) entry of a non-Im visa:

You need to go to a immigration BEFORE leaving the country, to get a re-entry visa stamp in your passport.

Will safe the visa from your last entry into Thailand to the 'original' date, you got stamped.

p.ex. visa valid till 15 oct., but you wanna fly to F1,in Spore, but not use the sec entry for coming back, but planning to extend the 30 days, before using the sec. entry.

Get the re-entry visa (1kI think) at immigration first, that will get you a re-entry stamp in your passport. After F1 your 'old' visa will be valid, till 15. oct. again.

There is a multiple re-entry visa (3900, sure) available, if needed. But that's only useful, if you have a extension of stay, one year or so, and need to leave, every now and then.

Only wondering: On tourist visa, and wanna travel around: aren't the 30 days, with a bit planning of your roundtrips, not enough?

As I wrote before, I think so.

And actually, you don't need to use the tourist visa, when entering! You can safe the entry for later, in case, your trip is around that time, you would need to extend, anyway. Don't mention the tourist visa, take a 30 day stamp, safe the 1900 (plus tea money?) this way.

There are a couple of options. With an eye on the calendar, you can find the best one.

Ok. If anyone else can also confirm that I can get a re entry permit for a double entry visa, that would be appreciated, good to have two sources.

You mention 30 days, why? As far as I know Europeans only get 15 days when entering over land. Maybe you were assuming that I would be flying? I'm taking the bus and the train.

A re-entry permit costs 1,000 baht and allows exit/return during the original permitted to stay that is in your passport at time you buy the permit. It does not add any time but if during the 60 day portion of a tourist visa would allow return and then extension of stay for the extra 30 days if used during the original 60 days. It could also be used the same way during the second entry.

Yep, I did, Singapore means always plane, to me. My fault. But by train (KL-S-Pore or Kl-HatYai) is nice, too
