Democrat seeks action against city police chief

BANGKOK: -- Democrat Party spokesman Ramet Rattanachaweng yesterday asked the national police chief to take action against Bangkok Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit Thoopkrachang over his alleged dereliction of duty in paying a visit to fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Ramet accused Kamronwit of violating the National Police Act 2003 and committing a serious disciplinary offence.

Kamronwit has admitted that he visited Thaksin and a picture of him posing with the former leader can be used as evidence, Ramet said.

"Kamronwit as a police officer needs to enforce the law but he does not seem to have the conscience of a policeman. He travelled far to visit a fugitive,'' he said.

Ramet added that the party had earlier filed a complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman, but Kamronwit's superior had not ordered a disciplinary probe, so he had no choice but to call on National Police Chief Pol General Priewpan Damapong to take action.

"We don't have any ulterior motives or political motivation to seek action against Kamronwit, because it will not change the government or discredit the ruling party. We just want to set a norm on whether it is all right for a police officer to visit a fugitive," he said.

Ramet added that he would also submit a copy of the request to the new national police chief, Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew, as well as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung.

Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Maj-General Piya Uthayo accepted Ramet's request and said he would follow up on it according to procedure, which might take some time.

We just had a bike stolen and amazingly police at Prachinburi found it. Went to pick it up and they had their hand out for a 1000 bt. We are not talking we offered them, they were not shy in asking to be paid"because they work hard".

There is very little the police do umless there is a buck in it. They promote this with the sharing of fines etc. If they need a little extra they just pull up more people, guilty or not. I see on them near my house pulling bikes over, 80% falungs.
