Pharmacists fired after ministry's cold-pill probe

Duangkamol Sajirawatthanakul

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry yesterday concluded its investigation of nine hospitals suspected of over-ordering pseudoephedrine-based cold pills and siphoning them to the illegal-drugs trade.

The ministry said that four pharmacists would be fired, while two other hospital staff, including the director of Uttaradit's Thong Saen Khan Hospital, were under serious investigation for disciplinary misdemeanours.

Twenty-three others were punished for non-serious disciplinary violations. No other executives or senior ministerial officials were implicated by the probe.

The four pharmacists fired for serious disciplinary violations were from Udon Thani, Thong Saen Khan and Kamalapisai hospitals, and Chiang Mai's Hot Hospital.

The investigation covered Udon Thani Hospital, Si Sa Ket's Phusing, Kalasin's Kamalapisai, Nong Bua Lamphu's Na Klang, Buri Ram's Nong Khee, Uttaradit's Thong Saen Khan, Chiang Mai's Hot and Doi Lor, and Lampang's Serm Ngam hospitals.

Deputy permanent secretary for Public Health Sopon Mekthon said the results of the investigation would go to the ministry's civil-service subcommittee on September 27 for finalising.

Dr Phaijit Worajit, Public Health Ministry permanent secretary, said the subcommittee's decision would also be submitted to the Department of Special Investigation's criminal investigation over the missing pills. Meanwhile, the ministry would ask the Finance Ministry to assess the damages and those responsible, in order to file civil lawsuits, Phaijit said.

A total of 12 million pills worth about Bt15 million went missing. Of these, the largest number - 7 million pills - went missing from Udon Thani Hospital, which would face the largest civil suit, said Phaijit.

BANGKOK: -- Veteran Democrat Suthep Thaugsuban survived impeachment in the Senate yesterday with only 40 senators voting against him, when 88 votes were needed to kick him out of politics.

In the secret ballot held yesterday, 95 senators voted in favour of Suthep, three abstained and one refused to cast a ballot.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission had asked the Senate to impeach Suthep on charges that he had abused his authority as deputy prime minister in the previous government by asking the then-culture minister to appoint some Democrat MPs and party members to work for the ministry.

Scribes complain over minister

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Reporters covering education filed a complaint with the prime minister yesterday over Suchart Tadathamrongvej, accusing the Education minister of being irresponsible over interviews.

Reporters met a deputy PM's secretary-general, then submitted an open letter to Yingluck Shinawatra.

About 10 education reporters went to Government House at 8:50am to submit an open letter to demand the prime minister review Suchart's behaviour. They were led by Thitiwan Sawaisaenyakorn, chairwoman of the Education Reporters Club and a news editor at Thai Rath.

Thitiwan said Suchart always retracted his words and blamed the media after giving interviews that drew a negative public response. She said the reporters found it unacceptable for the minister to take no responsibility for what he'd said in interviews, even though they were taped.

But Thitiwan managed to meet the PM at 1pm and raised the issue with Yingluck directly.

After Yingluck promised to look into the issue.
