SA KAEO, Sept 21 - Floodwaters in this Thai-Cambodian border province began to recede on Thursday, while the cost of damage in the province's commercial zone was initially estimated at up to five million baht per day.

The flood situation at the municipality market of Aranyaprathet district is easing after the rains have stopped for two days. Floodwater was measured at 50 centimetre deep, but in some areas along Prom Hote Canal, the floodwater was up to two metres deep.

Sa Kaeo Governor Sanit Narksuksri said if there is no more rainfall in the next several days, the flood situation will ease.

Damage from the flood at Aranyaprathet, the busiest town with brisk Thai-Cambodian trade, however was up to five million baht per day, said the governor, adding that more damage assessment of the infrastructure including roads, bridges, government agency buildings, schools and homes, will be conducted after floodwaters recede.

So far, the governor said, about 10,000 residents have been affected.

Mr Sanit said the flood in Aranyaprathet municipality also spread to 11 villages along the Thai-Cambodian border. Some 4,000 villagers have been under 2 metre deep floodwaters.

The governor expressed concern on the food shortage and other assistance for the flood-hit victims as the villages are located in remote areas.

He said that army personnel have already entered the areas and distributed food and drinking water to the residents there. (MCOT online news)

Consider building homes on stilts and businesses and shop houses should be a minimum of 1 metre above the roads in flood prone areas.

Thats just plain common sense, You can not use common sense here in fact there might be a law against it.

Brilliant idea! Why didn't anyone think of that before?

Ummm... wait....

It seems that Thai houses used to be built on stilts. Look at the rural areas with lots of wooden houses on stilts. For some bizarre reason, in recent decades that trend has stopped and houses built on level ground have become flooded...sounds to me like there used to be more common sense 50-100 years ago than now.

Aranyaprathet villager swept away, drowned in flood

SA KAEO, Sept 21 - The body of a 73-year-old man was found in a wooded area near the Thai-Cambodian border in this eastern province today.

Police said the body of Samorn Kaewkomol was found about 150 metres from None Sang village in Aranyaprathet district where he lived.

The authorities speculated that he was swept away while while wading in flood waters in the village after receiving a survival kit at nearby Wang Mon village.

Provincial authorities said today that floods which impeded communication and business in Aranyaprathet in the last four days have receded.

Flooding halted trading for several days in Aranyaprathet --the business hub on the Thai-Cambodian border here where the brisk Rong Klua market is located. (MCOT online news)

SA KAEW: -- A 73-year-old man who was returning home after receiving a relief bag was drowned on Thursday after a flash flood swept him away in Sa Kaew's Aranyaprathet district.

Samorn Kaewkomon's body was found wedged in a bush on Friday morning about 150 meters from the entrance of the village where he was last seen.

Initial police investigation showed that Samorn left his house in flooded Non Sang village of Tambon Takam at about 3pm on Thursday to pick up a relief bag at a nearby village. However on his way back, as he approached the entrance to his village, he was swept away by a strong current and disappeared.

After suffering severe flooding for the last four days but no rain for three days, water levels in the Muang Aranyaprathet municipality have now dropped by about 30 centimetres and small vehicles are able to access most areas. Tourists coaches to Rong Klue market near the border were seen returning to the area after being absent for a week due to the flooding.

Some villagers who evacuated to other areas also returned to their homes.

Meanwhile rescue workers were alerted by villagers in Dong Ngu village after a crocodile was spotted in a flooded area near the railway. They checked the area and captured a 1.50-metre fresh-water crocodile weighing about 20 kilogrammes. They speculated that it was a farm crocodile that escaped during the floods.

Where are the water pushing machines when you need them?

What is the current status? I have to visarun this night.

Yes, but some genius came up with the shop house concept and all common sense ended. Rows and rows of crappy buildings with no parking, but you can have a business inside. Pure genius that one.
