Forget Eyelash Extentons, I've Found The Miracle, Medical Treatment

Featured Replies

I got my eyelash extensions done last year back home and they lasted a week. They were horrible - very expensive (I got one of those deal of the day things), 65 lashes in each eyelid. She told me 'maintenance' was every 7-10 days and only $55 a pop. They looked awful. They were too long so I trimmed them. They felt false (no pun intended), and they weren't cheap and nasty - it was obviously just an almost freebie thing to suck you into going back 3 times a month - I have some friends who do. I'm not sure if real hair would be allowed in Australia (health and safety) but they felt very heavy, probably because there were so many of them. Also, a friend who got them done just before coming to Thailand on holiday lost most of hers within days - she blames the heat and humidity, maybe the pool which may be the case, but I don't know about the quality of the ones she got. I sat for hours rubbing coconut old on them to break down the glue - it took me almost a full day.

There is a better way - a medical product originally formulated for glaucoma, found that this product had a very handy side effect in the same way that Botox and acne treatment Retin-A did. People who have a medical condition where they have no eyelashes were all of a sudden fluttering extra long lashes. I know you can get it in Thailand but not sure if you need a prescription; It's called Bimatoprost - I did a lot of research because it sounds too good to be true, but I tried it. Within 4 weeks my lashes were pretty much double their previous length and a lot darker. Blurb says noticeable after 2 weeks, fully effective after 4 months. I stopped at 6 weeks because I was starting to look a bit odd, and now use it once a week instead of every night. I've always tinted my own lashes at home, lasts about 2 months, but I'm on once a month now! I get them permed occasionally, but it looks like I'm going to have to keep the perming up too as they are so long. Same as with tinting, it only lasts the lifetime of you eyelash which is between 2 and 3 months, after which your regrowth will go back to normal unless you use it. Roughly working out the dates, I'm coming to the end of the cycle, so will start 2 or maybe 3 times a week - just going to be a case of experimenting. Instructions say don't use on lower lids - meh. Worked for me. I also tried some on my eyebrows to get rid of an over-tweezed bit, and I couldn't swear to it, but I think it speeded up the growth.

This is being sold off-prescription in the US, going for $125 for a tiny bottle (I think it's 3ml). We were recently on holiday in Turkey and I noticed it on a shelf in a pharmacy - I forget how many dinars, but it was $3.50. I bought 2 years supply.

Beware of the things being advertised all over at the moment to promote eyelash growth, Some are pretending to be a non-medical grade of Bimatoprost or a natural substitue for it. Save your money. I haven't seen any independent scientific studies on any of these, probably because they would fall flat on their faces.

There are side effects, including possible discolouring of eyeballs but this was only on patients who were using it as eyedrops for glaucoma, no evidence I know of that anyone using it for lash growth. But, it is a medical product and I have no medical qualifications, so you need to do your research before trying. If you go for it, forget brushes or anything, put one drip on the tip of your finger and swipe along your eyelash line, using excess for the lower on then repeat for the other eye. For the first week I wasted more than I used, you can't beat your finger. I've seen one doctor recommend using a toothpick to drip it on and prevent waste, nah, one slip and you're gone.

Only 2 companies produce Bimatoprost - Latisse and Lumigan, but research the studies, not what they tell you on their (totally unbiased I'm sure) websites. I'd say the pretend products and serums are like diet drinks and other kinds of snake oil.

I hope this has brought some enjoyment to your day. My lashes really doubled in 4 weeks. After 3 weeks, my husband (who didn't notice when I went from peroxide blonde to ash with 4 inches cut off) kept looking at me in a very strange way before telling me I needed to go and see a doctor because my eyelashes were growing too fast and that must mean there's something wrong. Trust me. It works. And it darkens.

I am not sure how comfortable I would feel buying something in a pharmacy that is that much cheaper than the retail price in the UK or the US. What if it is one of these cheap Chinese copies? It is not unknown for people to buy cheap Chinese goods in the Mae Sai market and then have strange rashes etc. After all this is the nation that put melamine in dog food and baby milk powder.

You don't have to signal a social conscience by looking like a frump. Lace knickers won't hasten the holocaust, you can ban the bomb in a feather boa just as well as without, and a mild interest in the length of hemlines doesn't necessarily disqualify you from reading Das Kapital and agreeing with every word. ~Elizabeth Bibesco

I got it in Thailand first from a doctor - I had read about it and thought it sounded too good to be true, but I thought I'd give it a go. I believe he sourced it from a hospital pharmacy, but I could be wrong. He is, however, a practising medical doctor, and I'm not certain if it is available over the counter. The bottles I got in Turkey are exactly the same, down to the safety seal. I've used one and had no reaction. I get your point about Chinese rip-offs - most people have never heard of this, so the market for knock-offs isn't there yet. I'm quite sure when everyone is using it, the knock-offs will appear. In the US, when it is prescribed for glaucoma or eyelash loss because of disease or chemotherapy, it isn't expensive - it's only expensive when it's prescribed 'off prescription' for vanity reasons. I believe Retin-A is the same - if you have acne you get a tube for a couple of dollars, but if you want it for any other reason than it was intended - one of the side effects was elimination of fine-line wrinkles by way of reshaping the pores and stimulating collagen - it costs substantially more if you can get a doctor to do an off-prescription. Fortunately in Thailand Retin-A is available over the counter, and I'm living breathing proof that it does what it says. For a period of 1 year, I applied it to the top of my left hand as well as my face. The difference between left and right at the end of the 12 months was startling.
