Thailand wants to be the kitchen for a hungry world, Yingluck says in US

NEW YORK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra launched Thai Restaurant Week in New York yesterday to promote Thai food in the US and the policy of being the world's kitchen.

Thailand earns more than US$20 billion (Bt618 billion) from food exports annually and the country is the world's largest rice exporter due to its agricultural strength and advanced food-processing technology, she told participants at the event at a New York hotel. Yingluck was in the US for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

Seventeen Thai restaurants in New York received "Thai Select" awards from the prime minister to guarantee their food quality, according to the government website.

The government says it aimed to produce and export more food for the world market in order to contribute to global food security. This policy would be a major contribution to a world facing food challenges due to climate change, Yingluck said.

While in New York, Yingluck attended a high-level meeting on the rule of law at the national and international levels, where Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol delivered a speech on the topic.

Yingluck also attended a dinner hosted by US President Barack Obama where she spoke briefly with the president on the 180th anniversary of Thai-US diplomatic relations. She told Obama that Thailand was ready to cooperate with the US as a strategic partner and increase people-to-people relations.

Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul accompanied the PM to the UN meeting. He said he had invited investors |from Belgium to join in development of the Dawei special economic zone in Myanmar, during a bilateral meeting with his Belgian counterpart Didier Reynders in New York.

Dawei was launched as a keystone project in relations between Thailand and Myanmar under the Yingluck government.

The Thai government has invited many investors to join the project as Thailand seeks out sources of capital to develop it.

Yingluck is scheduled to meet Myanmar President Thein Sein in New York today to discuss ways to speed up the project and other economic cooperation.

There should be enough water around soon to be the kitchen sink.

The way the present PT government handles the economy with all their great scams schemes Thailand will be included in the list of "Hungry World" countries.

It is truly amazing how far the Thai tax revenue goes, to fund these trips and "high level" meetings and cocktail parties we read about. They say that the tax paying base in Thailand is 2 million entities/individuals on a total registered number of 9 million. Think about what we read and see if the numbers correlate.

As the spending continues to escalate, we could easily assume that they must be putting the serious squeeze on the "black Thai economy" pretty hard by now. The girls in all the sex trade venues, the street vendors, the illegal counterfeit intellectual property ..etc. One would wonder if Thai politicians ever acknowledge some gratitude for the girls, the real backbone of the Thai economy.

Wonder if the mediocre, walk-up Thai restaurant that her brother climbed the stairs to in New York just a few weeks ago received the prestigious "Thai Select" award.

Indeed, will any of the sub-par Thai eateries he attended on his coast-to-coast Grand USA Tour of Dire Thai Food Shops 2012 be similarly rewarded?

If this latest scheme for Thailand to be the Kitchen was known just a few weeks ago, he really did do a disservice to it by highlighting some of the worst Thai restaurants in the country on his tour.

She didn't get the memo or was this a little white lie?

No Deet, no poison fish balls, and toilet paper and soap in all Thai kitchens. Employees will all wear hats and latex gloves. All employees will be required to wash hands after picking noses and no picking in the food preparation areas. Nothing but the most sanitary conditions in all Thai kitchens. All Thai exported food will undergo and pass the most rigorous and strict health and sanitary checking standards, especially those prepackaged delicious fish balls. Thais will "guarantee" it.

Thailand and the Kitchen of the World Project

To draw the world's attention to Thailand's great culinary tradition, the Thai government, at the creative initiative of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, has launched the Kitchen of the World project

is yet another rehash to the "creative initiative" of 8 years ago....

And to guarantee the authentic Thai-style tastes of the exported Thai cuisine, a sub-project named Thai Select has been organised to take care of this matter. The Thai restaurants in foreign countries that meet the standard of the project will be awarded a Q-Mark certificate for their genuine Thai food.

Agricultural strength & processing technology: cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

You mean the millions of Thai rural workers following the single cow/plough, sowing crops by hand, hand spraying toxins, hand picking & thrashing rice, turning by hand to dry in the sun on plastic sheets, followed by hand bagging & stacking.. not a machine in sight !!

Strength in numbers maybe.. not technology.

another hub perhaps ?????

Generally people are hungry , because they are poor and can't afford to eat , so that excludes them from Yingluck's kitchen !! She deserves an award for waffle ( not the food variety ) !!!!

....really....this is total madness.....

Imagine global diarrhea.

No no, they aim to solve the problem by manipulating the rice market to increase the price, then poor, starving people will be able to afford it.

What could go wrong with that plan?

A New Hub: the KITCHEN HUB of the WORLD. There seems to be a lot of HUBS going around. HUBA HUBA

YINGLUCK: should be the chief Cook and Bottle Washer, Charlerm the Grease Trap Cleaner, and her brother Thaskin in charge of sweeping

Can't wait for the issue of Food safety to be addressed.

There's certainly plenty of unsold Thai rice at knock down prices right now.

Hungry people hubs

Went to the Thai consulate in NYC for a visa once. Toilet had a throne (with a seat!) and sink. Only. No soap, no towels, no tissue, no nozzle. Pretty authentic.

Best Thai food I had in the US was a hole-in-the-wall place in a lousy neighborhood in San Francisco. Incredible squid salad, and I usually don't like squid.

Oh yes....while we want to be your kitchen, we want to abuse your US citizens that are residing in Thailand. You know, treat them like third class people, double price them, scam them at every opportunity, and let's not forget robbing and killing them.

Who cares about their silly labels, as long as the restaurant passes the New York City Health inspections. I doubt there are very many Thai restaurants here in Thailand that could pass a health inspection.

'This policy would be a major contribution to a world facing food challenges due to climate change, Yingluck said.'

Clearly she isn't in the know about the potential effects of climate change - Mainly that agricultural output is expected to fall in tropical and dry countries

" Changes in climate could have significant impacts on food production around the world. Heat stress, droughts, and flooding events may lead to reductions in crop yields and livestock productivity......The greatest decreases in crop yields will likely occur in dry and tropical regions"

She starts her speech with a lie. India outsurpassed Thailand in rice exports this year.

When is the price of bacon going down?

We, at work, used to have lunch at a restaurant with one of those awards, we stopped going when we got fed up (ugh!) of finding cockroaches, whole or in part, in the food and tables.

The Hub Of Grub!....that has a neat splooge to it.

Kinda like Foodlover's line...Global Diarrhea...
