The Meaning Of "demonstration" In Demonstration Secondary School ?

Featured Replies

Dear all,

What is the meaning of "demonstration" in demonstration secondary school ?

Thanks

The vast majority of these schools are affiliated with other institutions, for example Sathit (demonstration) Chula, Sathit Mahidol, Sathit Maha Sarakham University etc.

It basically means "If Carlsberg did secondary schools, this is what they would be like . . . "

I am a former employee of one of the aforementioned.

- the first thing that one learns about English language terms in Thailand is that there is no standardized usage; the user can usually say whatever he wants, as long as he is only saying it in a foreign language.

- But with that caveat, this term usually means some or all of the following:

- smaller class sizes than normal

- an emphasis on innovative teaching techniques

- variations from standard timetabling, for example a longer than normal schoolday, offset by longer than normal vacation periods.

Can see why you aren't working there anymore. I had trouble following that, don't know what the Thai kids (generalize mode) all the Thais would make of it...........tongue.png

Demonstration schools are run by the universities. I assume that demonstration in the name is supposed to imply that the school is supposed to be a demonstration of how a school should be run, or perhaps a demonstration of the best Thailand/The university has to offer.

Schools have smaller classes of kids who either have rich parents or parents associated with the university. As a result, at the one I was teaching at anyway, the kids work very hard with private tutors (or parents helping them with homework) and often have their parents speak to them in English at home too.
