Quick Easy Visa + Thai D/l In Cm

I'm sure this has been answered here before, however it's hard to filter through the overwhelming volume of visa related issues and questions on the site. (please forgive me)

My goal is to get a Thai Drivers License in CM. My information is that friends of friends have gotten D/Ls with rental contract and a Tourist visa So question 1:

Can I get a Thai DL with a tourist Visa? If not what type of visa do I need - actual experiences please.

And Question 2:

What is the fastest/easiest place to fly to for a Tourist (or other) visa from CM? Just want to do a quick and painless flight, drop off the visa and come back as Ive been unsing the 30 day exemption each time I come in.

If anyone wants to add general info or experiences on getting a D/L in CM, that'd real helpful too. smile.png

Thanks & Regards,

SM

how are you going to get a letter of residency from immigration without some sort of yearly visa? does immigration issue one for a tourist? i doubt it. Good luck on that one.

Even if you go the expensive route and get a residency letter from your embassy, what is the proof you have to provide at the embassy?

I got a license with a tourist visa. To get the residency certificate you will need a rental contract. I believe if you show a agreement from a hotel that will suffice also. The license will be good for 1 year. Bring your license from your home country and you will just have to take a very simple test. The only drawback to applying with a tourist visa is you cannot apply for a 5 year license.

You have to apply for the 1 year licence whatever visa you have. After the first year, you apply for the 5 year licence.

The LTD will not issue a DL for 5 years if your on a tourist visa. You need to be on a 12 month long term extension to stay for a 5 year DL. If your still on a tourist visa you will only receive another 1 year dL

Thank-you. This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I have a rental contract so it should be no issue.

I got my car and motorcycle license while on a TV. You get the residency certificate from immigration, they charged me 500 baht. You will also need a quickie medical certificate from any local doctor or clinic, the guy on Loi Kroh only charges about 100 baht. It's just a colour blind test, he asks if you've had strokes etc. Just tell them at the desk what you want a medical for.
