Where Has The Best Coffee In Cm?

{Chorus of groans is heard throughout the forum}

Lately, we had a great thread on food for 50 baht, and also the perennial "best burger bunfight", so in a similar vein (if only I could get my caffein that way), where is the best coffee served in CM? I don't mean that stuff with all the frothy rubbish, but the best espresso, or the best americano... (NOT a pop at our colinal cousins, I promise)...if the coffee is good, then I can't see the point of polluting it with anything except water.

I expect to get flamed for taking the mickey out of burgers, so feel free to give it your best shot (or better still, make it a double!!)

I believe there has already been an extensive exploration of this subject in a previous thread......but for the record....

If you want to take a ride out to Baan Pong Noi near Wat Umong there is a small coffee shop across from Wat Pong Noi

called Luang Prabang and run by an enigmatic Thai-women who,in my opinion, does the best Americano at 40 baht.

As an American, I'd say the worst coffee (cafe') I've ever had was in Paris until I stumbled into a Burger King on the Champs Elysees. All that means is that I have lousy taste in coffee and can drink anything as long as it's American coffee shop style.

I make my coffee in a US$25 coffee maker and it's Folgers from a discount chain called Costco. So what would I know?

To answer your question I'd try Burger King or McDonalds and be happy.

Funny but in the US I was a real coffee nut.

Grinding the best beans at home & I was looking for the best

at gourmet shops while out. drinking at little specialty shops

Now here in Thailand I drink Nescafe 3in1 in the mornings

& Nescafe iced can coffee while out smile.png

I guess since now I am in a condo it is just easier in the mornings.

When I am out & about hot coffee is just too hot given the climate

& ice coffee has too much heavy cream for me.

While Nescafe ice coffee has skimmed milk.

Rimping supermarket by airport plaza (inside the supermarket) has the best coffee shop.

Agree... Toms(?) or a name like that, excellent quality blended local beans roasted to perfection + they operate a black van on Suthep Road near Bangkok and Kasikorn Banks.

Another is "Ristr8to" on Nimmenhaemin Road almost adjacent Soi3 - opposite Wawee Coffee. Ristr8to are true coffee specialists with beans from all over the World.

Also, Airport Central Plaza - top floor Food Court - small coffee stall near ticket booth.

Well it depends on your taste in coffee... but the best I have had in CM is at Ristr8tto, a little coffee shop on niman.

The owner/barista has won quite a few awards in both Australia and Thailand for his coffee and latte art. It is Italian/euro style rather than American style, and is best without sugar (its good coffee and is treated well so it isn't bitter). So if you enjoy Starbucks best avoid this one....

Also not for the cheap charlies, as a latte with your choice of single origin beans (Colombian, Brazilian etc etc) will set you back 88baht which is really quite reasonable for what you get...

Edit: ooops already mentioned above! tongue.png

Actually Micky-Dee's coffee is good, which I hate to admit, but I will support a local operation way before I'll open my pocket for any predatory American corporate whore (starbucks et...)

What the??? MD is a huge corporation owned by (and the profits go to) millions of individual stockholders. I have some in a mutual fund, and some more in a retirement fund. (401k for the US types.) That makes me one of the owners. I get a share of the profits. So can anyone else.

What's with the corporation bashing? It's just a symbol on the stock exchange, open to everyone. If you think it's a hog that's ripping everyone off, buy some stock and get your share. smile.png

I think "good" coffee is a personal preference just like tobacco or a brand of dill pickles. My best friend loves Starbucks but I think their coffee sucks, especially for the price.

But then I'm a coffee whore who drinks literally a pot a day, so I'll drink whatever's in front of me.

In response to intrepidexpat's remark, a couple of weeks ago I had a macchiato at Rimping close to Airport Plaza and it was the worst espresso I've ever had. Even dumped it out. The grind was much too fine and it tasted extremely bitter. I told the barrister and showed him how to adjust the grinder. Haven't returned during the day hours when the coffeeshop is open to ascertain if the grinder has been reset -- at any rate I certainly wouldn't pay for an espresso there, but would sample one at no charge.

I'll have an instant coffee in the morning too, started off with the nescafe 3 in 1 then "upgraded" to a jar of the Nescafe Freeze Dried Gold. Living it up here.

:) That is funny as I have a jar of that too.

But I like a little milk & sugar in my coffee.

So I end up just using the 3 in1 most of the time.

Toms is owned by the same person who runs the cafe in the Rimping Nim City (opposite airport plaza).

Thanks for the replies..... I guess I will have several places to go and check out, when I get back to CM.

@ NeverSure, I agree that the thread title was open to subjectivity. That was intentional. It was the only way to get a range of views IMO

@HaleySabai, I also accept that this topic has been done before, but coffee houses come and go, so thought maybe an update would not hurt too much. Thanks for your input.

For my part, I cannot drink instant coffee... not snobbery, well, maybe it is a bit, but instant coffee simply makes me curl up in agony: it must be something to do with the processing. However, I can drink fresh-ground coffee as strong as you like with no ill effect (maybe strange, but I never claimed to be normal!!!)

I found a great place that serves coffeee that really suits me. Rich Coffee House on Siripoom is very small, quiet place with very few seats, but for me, great coffee. The espresso, american and iced americano are all good. I rarely drink cappucino, but it was OK there too.

Anyone who mentions Nescafe or Starbucks contextually in a "where to find the best coffee" thread ought to be BANNED. Or banished to the mashed potato thread.....

:D

I know I know & like I said I use to be a coffee afficianado

So it is shocking to me too :)

I swear instant coffee use to taste like hot-dogs to me.

I don't know what happened :)

Would anyone be interested in a "proper" barista training morning? Price would depend on the number of people attending but you'd get to see how those people who want to charge you 65 baht for an espresso got the nerve and check out some really sexy coffee equipment.

PM me and if there is enough interest I'll try to set it up.

Dam_n..... I am salivating at the thought, but I am not back in CM until mid-January, otherwise I would sign up straight away.

Added to that, my Gaggia espresso maker here has gone t-up. sad.png

Guess I better be banned. Because back home in Canada I went to Starbucks daily sometimes several times a day as it was located right beside my place of employment. Now that I am living in Thailand I have graduated to Nescafe espresso roast. 5 - 6 cups a day.

No ban, but you could be branded as a troll for evermore unless you seek professional help wink.png

Rich is also one of my favorite coffee shops. Been going there for years now. They make a very nice cup of coffee.
