Hand, Foot And Mouth Disease In Doi Saket/san Kapheng Area

Recommended Posts

my 3 yr old nephew was diagnosed with 'hand, foot and mouth disease' [not to be confused with 'hoof and mouth disease'] last week and it led to the closure of at least 2 nursery schools in the Mongton area, near San Kapheng.

This can and has been a fatal disease if fever is untreated, as happened last year in Cambodia.

for more info and photos of the disease, which mainly effects children, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand,_foot_and_mouth_disease

just a head's up for parents with children if they show signs of blistering lips and around the mouth, then spreading to the hands and feet.

The virus has been around for months now. Almost all my friend's kids have had it. My child had it too. The strain that is fatal is the strain 71 in which about 20 or more kids died in Cambodia. I believe there has only been one reported case of strain 71 this side of the border. There is a protocol to close classrooms for two days and disinfect everything using bleach, should more than 2 students have the virus at the same time. Then the government has to sign off to re-open after they inspect and test. The fever usually lasts a day or two and can get quite high. My child did not get the blisters until the fever had already broken.
