Good Bar/pub In Cm To Hang Out In: Any Suggestions?

Featured Replies

The little bar I like to hang out in is closing . . . . . I need a new home! Factors I like to consider are:

1) price of a big Leo beer or other interesting and inexpensive ways to get drunk.

2) friendly staff & regulars

3) relaxed atmosphere

4) a little eye candy (I mean women), to make the beer taste all the sweeter. (Honestly I don't expect much, this is more of a wish)

5) location: for me closer to the old city is better. Anybody's "regular bar" shouldn't be too far away, IMO.

Thanks in advance. A lot of great information on TV. One has to filter through all the Negative Nancys out there, but still a lot of great info!

I quite like the Half Moon Bar, 65 Baht for large Leo until 8pm then 80 Baht. Plus there are lots of other bars close by.

The best eye candy is at the student bars (many around Nimmanhamin, Santitham, Huay Kaew and Suthap near CMU, etc.) but unless you are young and speak Thai you will have trouble fitting in.

As far as friendly staff and regulars, and a relaxed atmosphere I like the U.N. Irish Pub, but I don't think it's the cheapest place to get drunk.

Since you're looking for "relaxed" as opposed to loud and energetic I assume you are looking for a place where a, um, mature man would be comfortable (that rules out the Zoe in Yellow area), but it might help people if you were a little more specific about what age group you are comfortable with, as well as whether you want a mostly western crowd, a roughly even mix of Thai and westerners, or a mostly Thai place.

I quite like the Half Moon Bar,

the bars ok with good prices and you can watch / play pool

and see the tv sports stuff thats usually on but the eye candy left a few

weeks ago along with one of the cashiers

johns place is quite good if you can get a members discount card

and quite a few locals seem to gather there in the daytime : )

If you're happy to mix with Thais and 20+ YO serving girls

Chew Chew bar, Buddy's, Hero, Oxide and many others around Santhitham, Leo varies in price 50bht to about 65bht for a large bottle.

Say Hi, and about 20 others around the lake at Chang Puak (turn right after Asia Garden), 5 large Leos for 199bht, 3 large San Miquel for 210bht.

But yes, if you are over 60 and want to hang out with aging hookers (40+) Half Moon, Happy Bar and John's place will suit you.

Criteria sounds you're an Aussie ... though we'd have put 'eye candy' at number 2 position and inserted 'ice cold' somewhere in respect of beer ... so I'll pick you're maybe English? :D

Number1 bar(s) are both excellent but you might also try the DownUnder Pub on Loi Kroh - west of Night Bazaar, just before Iron Bridge and River Market restaurant.

You could try 100 Baht worth of Lao Khao in a Thai watering hole. smile.png

Number One (above) is probably your best bet for 'relaxed' and 'eye candy' as it's a cut above the average watering hole in that region, they have a good selection of beers and the girls won't hassle you.

The Saloon is also good: one on Loi Kroh (near totty centre) and one along Ratwithi (in old town) near UN.

Gecko Bar (near Imperial Mae Ping hotel) is alright for a cheap beer and decent grub.

lots of good choices.moon muang is the blue sky bar just as good with similar offers

Bonus.

Jokes aside, there are a bunch of non-franchised convenience stores in town that fit above criteria.

Cheap beer, table out front, regular customers, girls walking past every afternoon/evening dolled up going *where ever they go*.

Thanks everyone! I'm getting a nice little list started. Not sure I will find my new watering hole, but at least I have a project! I'll have to visit each of these establishments to gather more data. Purely in the name of science mind you, purely in the name of science.

Are all the girls in the bars on loi kroh barfinable? I'm not talking about the ones in the kick boxing Soi but the one near Raming lodge. From memory there was a Thai kitchen cooking school down hat Soi. I think one of them was a no 1 bar and another bar opposite but the staff used to swap between the 2. Last time I was there I wanted to ask if I could bar fine one of the girls but didn't want to offend anyone in case it wasn't that sort of bar.

Most are, yes. But not all, somtimes for practical reasons, i.e. already having a boyfriend-du-jour, being a cashier in a place with no backup for that particular role, bar owner/manager with enough money, personal preferences, phase of the moon, etc. But it's not unreasonable to expect they are, and inquire in a respectful manner.

Both places are Number 1 bar. About half to two-thirds of the staff there would be game, but no way of knowing for sure without asking.

My recommendation for a place that meets the requirements set out in the OP: Carnival, next to the 7-Eleven on Loy Kroh. Prices are only acceptable during their Happy Hour though, which is until 9pm.

As for some other places suggested here: I walked through Moon Muang sois 1-2 they other day and I was almost shocked at the scene. Retirement home-from-hell.

what about the cheese and ham sandwich or hotdogs, and on the way out look at the gossip mags too

Dayli ,Soi 11 Niman. 4 large Leo for 195. Asahi for a bit more. Consistently the coldest beer in town. Saw them deliver 30 cases one evening of Leo Bottles. They rotate them through a freezer.

Only 1 or 2 farangs in there, or zero, but they are student oriented and will practice English with you. I've been going in there for 6 years.......20-40 thb tip will get you VIP treatment the next time.

John charges 88 for a Large, and I have a card......it's just not as good as it was, but it's ok.

Better than going out of business.

Any place that sells 4 big bottles for under 200 baht deserves support, no matter what.

A while back I was introduced to a place having a nightly 'beer buffet' all-you-can-drink thing, with pretty beer girls to boot. The person who introduced me to it specifically requested to not share it on this forum, so I obliged, of course. It is out of business now, and nobody wins.

Give the Citirin Bar a try just outside the moat close to Chang Klan road. The owner and his wife are really friendly, she does great Thai food and he cooks up some decent western food. The beers are really cheap, they have decent HD quality screens for sports and he usually employs a couple of waitresses for a bit of eye candy. It's also a good mix of western and Thai people. Oh and he stays open quite late.

I'd go there more often if I didn't live so far away saai.gif

There Facebook page with link to map - https://www.facebook.com/Citirin

Seems the map doesn't work on that link. Here it is on Google maps - http://goo.gl/maps/Hy3h3

You can bar fine most of the women at most of the bars that are just bars on Loi Kroh (subject to how the woman is feeling and her other commitments, as described by WinnieTheKwai). However most or all of the places that are restaurant/bars don't have ladies for rent.

George Bernard Shaw once argued that any woman can be 'bar fined' subject to how she's feeling and her other commitments.
