In Asia they do more harm than good, the UN says

Across almost all of Asia, laws, policies and practices put in place to regulate prostitution do more harm than good, driving sex workers underground and increasing their vulnerability to HIV and a long string of other socially transmissible diseases.

In fact, just about every country’s approach does more harm than good, fueling stigma and discrimination, limiting access to sexual health services and condoms, and affecting the self-esteem of sex workers who may have no other avenue to earn income, according to a new United Nations report.

The 210-page report, "Sex Work and the Law in Asia and the Pacific, was issued by the United Nations Development Program and the UN Population Fund, in partnership with the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS and non-governmental organizations across Asia. It suggests that a radically different approach is necessary across Asia to control disease and make lives better for sex workers, including dropping the words “prostitute” and “prostitution” from the lexicon because they stigmatize those involved in the business.

"The term 'sex work' is preferred," the report said.

Organizations focusing on prostitution, HIV-AIDS and legal problems discussed these and other issues at a meeting in Bangkok on Oct. 18 in conjunction with the release of the report, written by human rights lawyer John Godwin.

While I get what your saying about many men not taking financial responsibility for their kids causing hardship, your conclusion is nonsense. There are plenty of women that find a way to take care of themselves and their kids without taking the easy route of prostitution. It is common for relatives to take on these children while the mother works regardless of what occupation she takes up. It just happens that some of these girls choose a life of easy money and partying over hard work. That is not a judgement, I doubt if I would want to work my ass off in some factory for almost nothing if I had the option to get paid a lot to party every night.

Sex workers are either part of human trafficking or simply work as a matter of choice. I suspect the former is the smaller percentage but at higher risk in so many ways. No amount of 'rules' or 'laws' will have any affect on them whatsoever. Licencing them? Maybe but then the 'policing' of licenses and or premises is so open to existing corruption what is the point? It is an age old problem and is not like to see any resolution any time soon.

The problem with this is children are hugely important for the future, specifically in the poorer areas, where a persons offspring are effectively their retirement plan.

Since when are abortions legal in Thailand? And certainly Jerrysteve is right about many poor mothers being forced into sex-work, what other jobs can an uneducated Isaan girl get? It all starts with education or a lack thereof and the same uneducated Thai men being rather irresponsible. Just about every girl I talk to, not all bargirls, do have at least 1 or 2 kids with "Papa no have".

So you are saying that if a prostitute gets pregnant then it is the punters fault and if she can identify the one particular sleaze out of thousands she has had, who was desparate enough to use a prostitute, then that man should pay? She is the owner operator of the business and she operates the equipment and if it gets broken don't expect the customer to pay for it. If she works for a pimp then ask him/her to bare the costs of damged equipment. Sorry but for a prostitute it is an occupational hazard and she should put measure in place to protect the assets.

That is a problem about proof, not about the law. (There was a case in germany where a woman had multiple sex partners, in that case 3 or 5. All had to undergo DNA testing and the father was determined and made to pay).

Who ever "faults" it is, it certainly is not the child's fault. The child is being protected, not the parents. Both took part in creating the child and are responsible.

It all starts with education or a lack thereof and the same uneducated Thai men being rather irresponsible. a) get education

work in 7/11 or similar

c) work as home maid...almost impossible to find and paid relative good

d) work in a restaurant

There is a big shortage on staff in Thailand. Our cleaning woman (Thai Yai) left because she got a better offer and she got 12.000 Baht per month....She got more salary than our accounting.

Abortion is legal in Thailand for health reasons. They are very lenient with the 'health' requirement and it includes MENTAL health. There are legal clinics where anyone can walk in and get an abortion basically on demand. There are also tons of private clinics that off abortions illegally.

How on earth is a thai prostitute going to know who the father is, she lays down with a dozen foreign sex tourists a day. She doesn't even get thier name or country they are from. About the only thing she would know about them is the colour of thier walet. I still believe that the prostitute who is sleeping with countless unknown men is responsible if she ends up pregnant. Abortion is not legal in Thailand, except in the case of pregnancy as a result of rape, or if the mother's life is in danger as a result of the pregnancy.

I think it is better because it is work. People should not get arrested because of working. A sex worker is not the same a bank robber. Some countries treat them the same. Call it what it is. It is work. Love is love and sex work is work. Big difference.

I think within some social groups they could also refer to Bank Robbery as work as that is what they do for a living but that is not the point. The point is that if you choose to prostitute yourself by providing sexual favour for money then it is prostitution by definition. Calling it sex worker it simply a sub definition promoted to lessen the impact of the perceived stigma associated to prostitutes, and as I said before nothing changes. I think that people living in Asia have less of a stigmatisation with regard to prostitution owing to a variety of factors.

Way back during the late 60's in Olongapo City, Philippines, just outside the main gate

to the US Naval Station Subic Bay, all the "sex workers" were required to carry one of

two "cards"...kinda thick paper issued by the health department. One card was green,

the other was Red and it was a law that the "sex workers" have either card on their

person at all times plus the "establishment" that employed said workers would be

closed down if said workers who carried Green Cards were in fact supposed to be

carrying Red Cards...and it was the establishments responsibility to ensure said

workers went to the local government clinics twice a week for check-ups.

This all came about when the clap and syph got outta hand and a lotta Sailors

and Marines contracted the STD's while on "shore leave" so the Navy and the

Government of the PI got together and set up the card scheme. The scheme

ran from around the late 60's until the US bases in the PI closed in 1992.

After closure and with the advent of HIV/AIDS many bar owners along with

the government kept the scheme going issuing the "sex workers" a credit

card looking smart card device that could be swiped almost anywhere it

plus clinics would be open to receiving relatively large sums of money

for fraudulently issuing Clean/STD Negative chops on the cards.

It's worth a try though....IMHO...

As far as pregnancy's go...it's the girl's responsibility to use birth control

and the man's responsibility to use a condom or get a vasectomy....

shit happens and when it does somebody has to bear the brunt of the

brat.
